Silvie Altschuler
In the spring of 2006, Gallery Noel Gyomarc’h discovered the whimsical creations of Silvie Altschuler. An enormous necklace made of transformed cuddly toys, figurines in plasticine representing comic strip heroes (Superman, Wonder woman….) dated and dismembered to be worn as pins or bracelets. A whole universe mirrored in the imagery of childhood and brushed with irony and humor. Enthused by its new discovery the gallery offered Silvie her first individual exposure.
Silvie Altschuler continues on her course and her new work is full of imagination, humor, irony and poetry. The titles of her creations are very evocative: Croque Monsieur is an enormous 22k gold bracelet in the shape of a crocodile, with an open mouth, a red fleshy tongue and beady eyes made of plastic. Terrine de lapin is a long 22k gold wire pin depicting a fox chasing a rabbit. Pas de deux is a pendant in the shape of a massive and not very slim bird with dancing legs made of thick cord.
Silvie had fun with materials, the gold is hammered and cut and she files it without the usual attention of a jeweler. She gives new dimension by integrating it into plastic, wool or felt figurines, which she finds transforms or creates. She plays with the concept of value, of the material and the work. Her choice of gold encourages the viewer to take a different view of jewelry.
Silvie got her degree from Alchimia Jewelry School in Florence, Italy just last year. She has already exhibited in the prestigious Schmuck 2006 exhibition in Munich Germany, as well as Romancing the Stone in Manchester (Arts Ornata Europeana) and also Object Toronto in 2007 with the gallery Noel Guyomarc’h . Silvie’s creations are fresh air in the contemporary jewelry scene. Her jewelry is accessible and always puts a smile on faces.
