Gemstones were the reason that a long time ago Ralph Bakker decided to become a jeweler. He thought they would be a perfect way to woo a girl. Still, just forging a ring and embellishing it with a little stone? That would only be a sign of weakness for a real artist.
Artist list
Ralph Bakker
Bakker recently developed an idea to construct rings based on the principle of corrugated cardboard; the miniature undulation making bold forms robust. Another advantage is that Bakker can use metals in a very efficient way, so that the results become light and easy to wear.
Once Bakker sets gemstones these rings, they more-or-less float inside their casing, completely visible from both sides. Within these mountings the stones are positioned at a right-angle to the hand, and will receive all the attention they deserve. For also the gems the artist choose, are far beyond mediocrity. Among the pieces displayed in the exhibition will be an unusually colored garnet, a slice of rutile quartz and a yellow-green prasiolite. Each stone is carefully fixed in its wrapper by a multitude of miniature, golden spheres. As a result, the outside of his rings will be enlivened by an alluring cloud of tiny golden specks.
And between Bakker and the girls? Fortunately, everything worked out fine in the end…
