From the garden to nature, the rocks and the sea, to man's coexistence with the earth and each other, craft stories follow. The Bjäre peninsula in northwestern Skåne is a place where nature, culture and creativity have long interacted. With its dramatic slopes, its favorable climate and its rich history, the area has inspired generations of artists, craftsmen and visionaries. This location is home to RAVINEN Kulturhus, which will be showing the exhibition BIÆRGHE with Nutida Svenskt Silver this autumn.
The name Bjäre has its origins in the Old Swedish word for mountain, biærgh. Like the exhibition title, the exhibition consists of a collection of expressions taken from this peninsula, carried out through something as ancient as handicrafts to create a cavalcade of contemporary interpretations of the place.
In this exhibition, Bjäre's unique story meets contemporary interpretations of silver and goldsmithing. Through the works created by Nutida's smiths, the history, nature and cultural heritage of the landscape are given new expression. Here, tradition and innovation are united in a diversity of materials, techniques and artistic perspectives.
Like exploring the different spaces of nature or the garden, the exhibition Biærghe leads you on paths between everything from joyful vibrancy to the reminder of the ephemeral. Welcome to experience what Contemporary Swedish Silver can be in this place!
Nutida Svenskt Silver is a group of silversmiths and goldsmiths who work in broad and innovative ways. They have been “contemporary” since 1963. Today, they express themselves through all types of materials and techniques. They create unique jewellery, objects, and items in limited editions. All manufacturing takes place in their own workshops. All members are selected by a review jury. Their ambition is to continually find new ways and contexts in which to meet the public.
About Tobias Birgersson's piece:
The Spudness of Things
“Billen, billen för helvede, pågasnöre – pärorna ska opp ur jårn!”
A wooden handle, carefully crafted to fit the hand, suggests an obvious function: to hold, guide, dig. But what, exactly, is it a handle for? Attached to a forged metal form—reminiscent of a tool, yet clearly detached from its function—a shift occurs, rendering the familiar uncertain.
The metal bears the same care as the wood: worked, hammered, and shaped in the forge with precision and experience. Yet it serves no obvious purpose. Here, a paradox emerges—nothing is quite so useless as a tool without a function.
At the same time, perhaps it is precisely through this loss that the object’s own “thingness” becomes visible. When use falls away, the thing itself comes to the fore.
The object speaks to the craftsperson’s relationship with their tools, to their particularity and intimacy. The blacksmith fills the workshop with tools they have made themselves, each object created for a specific use, a particular hand, a precise movement.
But here, that specificity has slipped. The form remains, but its purpose has dissolved—as though the tool has turned away from its task and instead turned toward the viewer.
The work is also an homage to the artist’s youthful job as a potato farmhand on the Bjäre Peninsula—a bodily experience of soil, tools, and rhythm, where labor and material were once inseparably intertwined.
The Spudness of Things moves between categories and roles: art, product, object, potato, thing, tool.
Opening hours: Wednesday to Sunday, 11 am – 5 pm
