In a city with a glassmaking heritage that spans millennia, The Transparent Breath reaffirms Venice's status as the epicenter of contemporary glass art. Eleonora Varotto, the curator, expressed her excitement about the event: “We are thrilled to present, for the third consecutive year, a selection of contemporary glass jewelry capable of enchanting and inspiring those who admire them, fostering dialogue on their inclusion in such a rich cultural heritage as that of Venice.”
Integral to The Venice Glass Week 2024
The Transparent Breath is a highlight of The Venice Glass Week 2024, an international festival dedicated to the art of glassmaking. Established in 2017, this annual event transforms Venice into a vibrant hub for glass art enthusiasts and professionals. The eighth edition of the festival will take place from September 14th to 22nd, 2024, featuring a diverse range of exhibitions, workshops, and conferences. The Venice Glass Week is organized by a coalition of prestigious Venetian institutions, including the City of Venice, the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, LE STANZE DEL VETRO – Fondazione Giorgio Cini, the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti, and Consorzio Promovetro Murano.
The artists and their creations
The Transparent Breath offers a platform for artists who bring their unique visions to life through glass. Among them, Joanna Muzyka from Poland presents pieces that embody the delicate balance between beauty and danger, while Claire England from Spain uses recycled glass to craft rings that tell stories of past lives. Veronika Fabian (UK - Hungary) reconstructs everyday objects into meaningful jewelry, and Jasminka Begić (Croatia) creates intricate glass "embroidery" that captivates with its unexpected beauty.
Russian artist Liudmila Egorova explores the intersection of natural creativity and artificial intelligence in her work, while Luz Arias from Argentina designs delicate glass chains that reflect unique shapes and colors. Loor Oukal from Palestine investigates the invisible presence of glass in our daily lives, and American artist Karen Kriegel fascinates us with her playful combinations of glass, metal, and leather. The Italian duo Clangbag showcases their craftsmanship with pieces that epitomize Italian excellence, and Sente Takayuki Ota from Japan captures the ethereal movements of water in his jewelry.
Returning artists include Alexandra Mezo from Ireland, who preserves her grandmother’s embroidery in glass, and Celina Szelejewska-Pigulla from Germany, who creates layered glass pieces with a captivating depth effect. Iveta Linde from Latvia tells stories through glass pendants, and David Yeshia from Canada uses glass to capture moments in time, while Barbara Moro from Hungary draws inspiration from the vibrant colors of India.
This edition also introduces three emerging talents: Emma Calce from Italy, whose work reflects on the relationship between humans and nature through biomimicry; Ève Chevara from France, who draws inspiration from ancient and medieval art as well as childhood seascapes; and Dominyka Gulbinaitė from Lithuania, who creates rings that evoke the luminous beauty of life.
The Transparent Breath is more than just an exhibition; it is a celebration of the rich cultural heritage of Venice and the endless possibilities that glass offers as a medium for contemporary jewelry.
