Intro
As we turn to the New Year, Patina Gallery is thrilled to introduce one of the newest artists to join our soul-stirring family, ceramicist Jim Kraft. From indoor tile murals to hand-built vessels and sculpture, Kraft sculpts a myriad of acclaimed clay earthenware, created from the artist's pure love for the handmade.

Artist list

Jim Kraft
Kraft received a BA in Ceramics from Northern Michigan University in Marquette and a BFA in Ceramics from the University of Washington. Since the 1970s, the artist has been the recipient of two grants from the Ford Foundation and has exhibited in Portugal, Romania, and across the United States. His work is included in public and private collections throughout the States, including those of the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture in Washington and the Boise Art Museum in Idaho.

From his home studio in Washington, the artist imagines wares that are at once organic and elegant. Multidimensional lattices, soundly built layer upon layer, propel visual properties beyond their clay bodies. Cylinder columns become nearly woven or ligneous. Undulating forms that ripple to the outer lips of his vessels become more reminiscent of the flow of tapestry rather than any ceramic rigidity.

My work in clay has been an evolution of ideas over five decades. I would like to think of my work and the act of making it as a connection to past cultures, who used the same clay materials to make vessels for ceremony and for everyday use. I like the idea of being a part of the long history of people making things with their hands.

Applauded crevices and cracks in these subtle surfaces are a triumphant nod to the eye and hand, while remaining a sophisticated and genteel statement in space.

I enjoy working with the idea of smaller parts making up the whole. Whether tiles on a wall, or vessels made with coil and brick-like pieces, cut and torn clay parts becoming as if woven or basket-like. The vessel form appeals to me on a level that I don’t understand. It is a sort of mystery. When I am out in the world and see such a form, I am immediately drawn to it.

Across Kraft’s collection at Patina, his works are prized as relics, born of contemporary design. Intricacies in color, form, and texture invite the eye to ponder at objects that could easily identify as an ancient treasure, belonging in a coveted collection of any prominent museum around the world. In its soft eccentricity, in its complex body and patina, Kraft creates signature works of art that not only serve as exemplary pieces in space, but works that continually tempt the body and soul.
