Bio
Ivan Barnett is a studio artist, mentor, former gallery director and owner, and consultant with a life rooted in creativity, authenticity, and the transformative power of art. With over five decades of experience, Ivan’s journey reflects his passion for artistic exploration and commitment to fostering creativity in others.Born in Pennsylvania to an artistic family, Ivan’s father, Isa Barnett, was a celebrated painter whose works are in esteemed collections like the New Mexico Museum of Art. His mother, Annette, was an arts educator who instilled a love of storytelling and craftsmanship. Growing up in this creative environment, Ivan learned the importance of design, detail, and experimentation. His father’s mantra, “There are no straight lines in nature,” became a guiding principle in his life and work.
Encouraged to explore his imagination, Ivan balanced playful creativity with disciplined skill. This foundation shaped his artistic approach, which he refined at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. After serving in the U.S. Army, he dedicated himself to life as a working artist. Oxidized metal became his favored medium, alongside sculpture, photography, and mixed media, with a focus on transforming found objects into meaningful art.
In 1999, Ivan co-founded Patina Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, a celebrated space showcasing fine art and craft. Patina became an internationally acclaimed institution, producing nearly 275 curated exhibitions over two decades. Ivan’s vision combined storytelling and artistic excellence, making the gallery a cornerstone of Santa Fe’s art scene.
Throughout his career, Ivan has displayed resilience and innovation, steering Patina through challenges like 9/11, the 2008 financial crisis, and the global pandemic. His early investment in digital infrastructure allowed Patina to thrive during the pandemic, transitioning seamlessly into e-commerce. These experiences highlight Ivan’s strategic foresight and empathy for the artists and staff who relied on him.
After leaving Patina Gallery in 2023, Ivan launched Serious Play, a consultancy empowering artists and creatives. The name reflects Ivan’s lifelong philosophy: true creativity emerges from the balance of playfulness and discipline. Serious Play offers tailored guidance in studio management, marketing, and personal development, to help artists navigate their careers while staying true to their vision.
Ivan’s coaching style distinguishes itself by empathy, active listening, and a collaborative approach. He connects on both professional and personal levels and draws on his own experiences to guide others. Through storytelling, he helps clients uncover the deeper meaning in their work, fostering growth, empowerment, and improved financial stability.
With integrity, curiosity, and boundless energy, Ivan approaches life with wonder, curiosity and commitment to excellence. He builds relationships on trust and mutual respect, and his humility underscores his role as both teacher and student in the creative process.
Ivan’s influence extends beyond the art world, and integrates creativity and business to inspire innovation. Through Patina Gallery, his personal art, and Serious Play, Ivan establishes a lasting legacy of connection and creativity. His story testifies to the idea that art is not just something we create but something we live.
Statement
I can segregate the creative and analytical aspects of my mind, enabling intense focus whether creating art, engaging in photography, or helping an art gallery succeed. My approach mirrors Alfred Stieglitz, a significant artist and gallery curator. I've utilized my talent for connecting people and ideas that transformed Patina Gallery into an immersive art experience.Growing up in an artistic household, my father, a noted illustrator and painter, navigated various artistic domains. This blend of art forms instilled the discipline necessary for success in both artistic and commercial spheres. My formal training began at the Philadelphia College of Art, focusing on design, with mentorship from Olaf Skoogfors, a key founder in the Society of North American Goldsmiths.
Networking has been vital throughout my career. My ability to network effectively brought significant attention, notably a New York Times feature in 1987 that raised my profile. As the jewelry market evolves, distinguishing between wearable art and functional jewelry becomes complex. Well-crafted pieces showcasing exceptional design and craftsmanship, like those by Ulla and Martin Kauffman, consistently retain value and appeal.
As an artist and entrepreneur, I embrace technology to enhance business practices without overshadowing the artistic process. My current work integrates various artistic elements, influenced by my passion for assembling found objects. My new studio in Santa Fe is a collaborative space where I assist other artists in blending fine art with commercial success. This synthesis of creativity and business acumen has defined my career, allowing me to leave a lasting impact in the art world.
