Kay Khan’s textile necklaces for Patina are an artful amalgamation of imagery. Crossing an interplay of pictorial sensation, tone and texture, tactile expressions emerge, reflecting the artist’s most ardent inspirations of life.
Artist list
Kay Khan
Khan emerged from beginnings in fine art, as a student of painting and ceramic sculpture at James Madison University in Virginia. Since then, her work has gone into the collections of esteemed institutions across the United States, including the De Young Museum in San Francisco, the Museum of Art & Design in New York City, The New Mexico Museum of Art in Santa Fe, among others.
Exploring her subject in scale and proportion, Khan exercises her interest in art jewelry by means of sewing, stitching and quilting to construct wearable sculpture for the body.
Structure, pattern, composition and color come together in her work to invite curiosity, while becoming a wellspring of revelation. As a multitude of materials connect, Khan’s composition is then imbued with a detailed appliqué or embellished with decorative stitching. Lustrous gemstones make their way across the perimeter of her work, emboldening her sensuous structure.
Flow and pattern brightly juxtapose one another as Khan communicates what she sees into palpable expression.
