There are no shortcuts to excellence, and acclaimed artists Claire Kahn and Andrew prove it with works in gold, the very symbol of highest quality.

Claire and I both share a love of handmade objects, in particular intricate handmade objects, says Fisher, well known in San Francisco for hand-gilded tapestries and gold sculptures that resemble large nests. Obviously we both love the spiritual side of working with our hands in repetitive ways. We are exactly the opposite of technology.

Kahn and Fisher open A Friendship Forged in Gold on Friday, October 13, 2017, at Patina Gallery in Santa Fe. The exhibition joins two friends bound by their love of making and studying art. Our friendship goes back 22 years. Our loved ones are close, Kahn says, describing a connection that grew as each enjoyed successful design careers in San Francisco.

Kahn and Fisher share a highly sophisticated approach to design that blends a passion for pattern and geometry with a love of luxurious materials and craftsmanship.

Creations in gold are the signature of the exhibition. Gold, for sure, inspires us, Fisher continues, because of its association with illumination, mystical power and glamour. We love adornment, Claire the body and me the space the body lives in.

Andrew Fisher blends his love of metal and sculpture. Using canvas, steel and paper, he creates intricately sewn tapestries. He hand gilds the tapestries in 24-carat gold leaf, sometimes adding a glaze of oil paint.

Kahn, a favorite of Santa Fe jewelry collectors, is presenting her seventh show at Patina, her exclusive representative. For the new collection, she uses seed beads of 24-karat gold plate over glass and carefully chooses high-karat yellow gold, diamonds and other gems to embellish her necklaces and bracelets with ornaments, charms and accents. The close artistic relationship is obvious. Kahn creates sensuous necklaces and bracelets in bead crochet, producing results that are like micro mosaics, thousands of tiny beads coming together to create a single expression. Fisher, working on a larger scale, expresses his visions in elegant surfaces and larger planes of gold texture.

I am thinking of a series that is gold on gold, Kahn says, “where interest comes from the texture of the surface. This is in response to Andrew’s work. For three pairings, six pieces in total, she blends and contrasts gold with another color group. One will be gold and pink, and its pairing will include ruby accents, Kahn explains. “Another will do the same, but with gold and green, and will be paired with emerald. The third will be blue with pale sapphire accents.
