Peter Schmid
I like collaboration and getting inspired from something like the opera. Opera emphasizes the importance of interpretation. Then it becomes about having an emotional reaction, and I’m always impressed by the feeling opera may arise in a person … I like emotion in any direction. You have to open yourself to be vulnerable and that is when it connects. My jewelry is big and bold, yet it always has a human touch to it. When I accomplish creating something for that person, that is when the magic happens.

Peter Schmid of Atelier Zobel returns to Patina Gallery for his eighteenth exhibition, Passion & Pearls. Known for their revolutionary technique of fusing gold with sterling silver, Atelier Zobel has established a legacy of masters in both design and alchemy to create one-of-a-kind pieces of adornment.

Schmid notes that his collection for Patina seeks to capture the historical prominence of pearl diving that holds eminence in Bizet’s exotic opera, the textiles and adornment of the women in the period and the beguiling atmosphere of Nineteenth-Century Ceylon (modern day Sri Lanka).

Acknowledging the movement of Orientalism, which took hold in Western Europe during the time 25-year-old Bizet composed his opera, Schmid conceptualizes a collection of jewels sensitive to an individual romance of Southeast Asia.

Patina invites one to delve into breathtaking adornment as we explore the lure of pearls, sapphires, coral, abalone and the hypnotic allure of the island.

Peter Schmid’s Passion & Pearls unveils a measure of opulence, beholden of art jewelry, which will awaken the eye and enliven the soul.

Passion & Pearls will be the fourth collaboration of this kind between Patina Gallery and artist, Peter Schmid. Previous operatic exhibitions from Patina include 2018's Captivating Brilliance, influenced by The Santa Fe Opera’s production of Madame Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini. The exhibition, 60 Shades of Black, was influenced by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Don Giovanni in the 2016 Santa Fe Opera season. Their 2015 exhibition, The Couleurs of Atelier Zobel, was influenced by the opera, La Finta Giardiniera by Mozart in the 2015 opera season.

About Peter Schmid of Atelier Zobel:
Peter Schmid owns Atelier Zobel in Konstanz, Germany. The atelier is known for its remarkable goldsmithing and soldering technique. His work is revered worldwide for its attention to detail, its fusion of gold & silver, his gemstone settings, and the fluid movement all his pieces seem to share. Therefore, Schmid is both an artist and craftsman, and he brings that special blend to every piece he creates. His chief inspiration is a character: the character of the place, the character of the material, even the character of intent. Mountains and rivers inspire him. Precious stones inspire him. For the maker and owner of Atelier Zobel, every piece is about the interaction of visual elements with invisible inspiration.
