Dr Farieda Nazier from the University of Johannesburg is coming to Berlin to lecture on her artistic work and present her latest jewellery pieces in the Remise.
"They wore our skin and bones": On jewellery, merch and contemporary trophies.
Farieda will screen a short film and discuss and exhibit her most recent works.
Farieda Nazier is an artist, academic, and activist whose Afro-feminist memory work speaks on how colonial and apartheid histories shape our contemporary experiences. She focuses on Transformative Art Practice, including jewellery, a growing field that seeks to facilitate social justice through art.
Her series of Trophy jewellery pieces draws attention to the uneasy transformation of narrative into commodity. They expose how memory, labour, and ecology are reduced to spectacle under capitalist and colonial systems. To wear them is to carry contradiction—to become both subject and surface.
Dr. Farieda Nazier, University of Johannesburg, Faculty of Art, Design & Architecture, Senior Lecturer - Curator of FADA Gallery.
Registration is requested.
The lecture with video is in English and will be translated into German if necessary.
When: 27 May 2025 at 7 pm.
Where: Atelier Martina Dempf in the Remise. Fraenkelufer 44, Remise in the courtyard, 1st floor.
