Faux Art History. A lecture by Jie Gao

Intro
Gao defines himself as the historiographer of the Faux Art History, chief interpreter for Chinese classic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Artistic Technician of Artificial Intelligence, and the chief physician of the Art Parameter. His works are cross-discipline and in-depth, keeping on challenging the existing framework of knowledge. Every piece of his work enables viewers to be included in a “nomad” construction.
Born and raised in the petit southeastern island of Gulangsu, which is also home for many overseas Chinese, Artist Jie Gao studied and lived in France for 12 years after graduating from university, and is now working and living in Shanghai.

In his lecture Faux Art History, Gao will talk about seven of his artworks.


Artwork 1: Network Program.

Art Parameter, network program, 2007-2019 in progress.


Art Parameter is a procedure to comment on any artistic works that anyone could use while it itself is also a piece of artistic work applied to comment on another work. Through 5 versions, inspecting nearly a hundred artistic works, it has already been conducted for 9 years, which involves issues like conveying the artistic works, the communication and the cognitive style towards them.


Artwork 2: Book.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms, book, 2015-2016, 25 x 17.5 x 4.1 cm.


The form of Romance of the Three Kingdoms is a book which is divided into two types, the compromise version and the correct version. The compromise versions were printed uniformly so that all the ‘time, locations and characters ’in the books were replaced by the first time, locations and characters’ appeared in the original, while the correct versions accepted the personal tailor thus all of them are unique. All the ‘time, locations and characters ’ in the original Romance of the Three Kingdoms were replaced by what the customers positioned themselves.





It involves issues, such as the narrative and the structure of language and how the subject self-positions in the popular culture.


Artwork 3: Audio Program.

Faux Art History, audio- 12-30 min for each issue, 1st and 15th per month since 2016 published on public internet radios, in progress.


Fake Art History is a serial radio program to reconstruct art history. Each issue introduces one famous artistic work; however, it is dissociated from the original history background as another work in another period of history. Through this way, people should reorganize the knowledge of the art history, philosophy, aesthetics and sociology to enjoy contemporary art. Since the object is virtual, the contemporary knowledge listeners get will not be rigid.
It involves the binding relationships between form, knowledge, time and artistic works.


Artwork 4: Definition of Philosophy.

Define a concept contains behavior, video, acrylic painting on canvas or sculpture (variable-sized), book, 2013 - 2016.


Define a concept is a piece of work using art to define philosophy in reverse. The concept is not a word, neither an explanation in the dictionary. Each concept is only the statement without core, which is like an onion or family group (Wittgenstein). What’s more, only the concepts being communicated exist; hence, concepts cannot be dissociated from communication. An ‘exponent’ who picks one word that he or she thinks it relates to himself or herself and has a conversation with me about this word for 40 minutes. (Video) The life and status of the exponent mingle in this communication. I, as a receiver, will transform what I hear into the image. (Acrylic painting or sculpture) It’s kind of status between words and pictures. Moreover, according to the image, a novel will be used to purify the concept. (Book)


Artwork 5: Plane.

The superego of a capitalism-the apartment I have to move in 2015, 2016. Material: Acrylic on Canvas. Size: 2 x 2 m.


Apply the image format between words and paintings: DESIGN. In order to reproduce my apartment, every piece in the design is a kind of language involving 20 languages which can be used to unscramble this space, such as matter, unknown force, biology, quantum physics, mathematics, chemistry, word, time, relativity theory, string theory. Each of the languages uses its own way to express the space.
This work, along with the other two, and I form an equation.


Artwork 6: Art4A.I.1.0.




Art4A.I. is an abbreviation of Art for A.I., which denotes the art created for the appreciation of artificial intelligence. This is an art project created by the artist Jie Gao, consisting of a series of artworks and conversations.
Art4A.I. 1.0 is an internet-based mobile game. The goal is to create a game for humans while utilizing human beings’ gaming activities to create a parasaurolophus that A.I. may appreciate.
Art4A.I. contains a series of questions, what is A.I., what is human, what is art, the art that A.I. will appreciate. The foundation of human vision and aesthetics comes from the codes of genes, and humans write the genetic codes for A.I. From the perspective of A.I., the condensation of human aesthetic a culture is transient, random, and meaningless.
In the future, every piece of art will bring an art world dedicated to the work per se.
This game comes with an art world. There are six art museums running in the game. The art museum in this work can be collected. You or the AI as an observer can upvote the parasaurolophus you admire, or downvote, which will affect the algorithm of the parasaurolophus under the concept of evolution, and subsequently, the new parasaurolophuses in the future will look closer the parasaurolophus that gets more upvotes. As an observer, you can leave messages in the game, and the messages will be spoken out by the art world participants played A.I. (critics, art viewers, collectors, art teachers, art students, etc.) Observers’ upvotes and downvotes will affect the probability of the messages being picked up.


Artwork 7: Art4A.I.2.0.

Artificial Intelligence - A.I., 2018.


Art4A.I.2.0 is an artificial intelligence called Little Boy. The artist borrowed a powerful A.I. from Dr. Weicheng Zeng and trained the A.I. with the little boy's aesthetic answers. The A.I. obtained a large number of pictures from the internet and the artist marked the accepted and rejected pictures, and also the valid area in the accepted pictures. The rejected pictures are also required for deep learning.
The A.I. after deep learning training can calculate and output its own aesthetic answers to any picture with great rigor and precision, and also reflect some interesting aesthetic preferences. The A.I. is named by Gao Jie as Little Boy.
You can scan the QR code to use Little Boy without having to install it. You can take and send any picture to Little Boy and he will tell you if he likes it or not.
