Confirmation of the scholarship will be made in mid-December 2021.

  • Curriculum vitae including details of previous grants, awards, prizes.
  • Proof of final degree.
  • Work samples: products / models, photographs or other pictures of the Design work (folder, catalogue).

Intro
"Designers in Residence" is directed towards young designers especially in the areas of jewellery, fashion, accessory, and industrial design. Interdisciplinary working methods are welcome. In total there will be three scholarships for a three-month working phase at the EMMA Creative Center in Pforzheim. The scholarship holders will have access to fully equipped workshop workplaces as well as coworking desks in the EMMA Creative Center. The EMMA Creative Center is the central platform for creative people in Pforzheim.
The creative center is housed on the premises of a former swimming pool designed in the art nouveau style next to the river Enz in Pforzheim. The creative center has an area of 3,000m2 and offers workshops and co-working workplaces, ateliers, offices and exhibition spaces. The town of Pforzheim is also characterized by an active creative scene which is focused on the area of design. Pforzheim University has established Pforzheim as a university town with an international reputation.


Scholarship benefits:
In total there will be three scholarships. Of all applications, the three best will be considered. The scholarship includes the use of the fully equipped workshop and coworking workplaces in the EMMA Creative Center in Pforzheim and free accommodation for the period of three
months. As required, it will also be possible to use the workshop facilities of the Pforzheim University of Applied Sciences. In addition, each scholarship holder will receive monthly support of 1,000 euros together with travel costs for the journey from and back to home. A special allowance will be made available for material costs. During the scholarship, there is the opportunity to network and exchange ideas with the jury and professors at Pforzheim University.
The results of the scholarship will be presented in an exhibition at the EMMA Creative Center in Pforzheim and in cooperation with the Design Center Baden-Württemberg in Stuttgart. Those accepting the scholarship are required to be in residence. The scholarship holder may only be absent for a maximum of 10 days. The period of residence in Pforzheim is from April 1 to June 30, 2022.

Corona note: The scholarship will be implemented locally taking into account the current Corona regulations. In case of an entry ban due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the scholarship can be completed online in individual cases.


Jury:
Amelie Marie Gaydoul, Menswear designer, Copenhagen.
Studied fashion design at Pforzheim University and started her career as a Menswear Designer in Scandinavia where she worked for Norse Projects in Copenhagen. Since 2014 she’s been a scholarship holder of the German Academic Scholarship Foundation and graduated from the prestigious MA Menswear course at the University of Westminster in London in 2019. Since then she has lived in Paris and worked in the MRTW Design Team at Givenchy. Currently, she is a Menswear Designer on a freelance basis for brands in London, Paris, and Copenhagen.

Frederike Kintscher, Industrial designer, Verband Deutscher Industrie Designer e.V., Berlin.
Studied Industrial Design at the Bergische Universität in Wuppertal and completed a Master of Science in Product Design at the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, CA, USA. She is involved in the Association of German Industrial Designers - VDID e.V. and is representing it in the Deutscher Designtag e.V. since 2018, as vice speaker in the Kulturrat e.V. and in the BEDA Bureau of European Design Associations, in the leadership of the Council for Europe/International Affairs of the Deutscher Designtag. She is an active campaigner for the themes of values, sustainability, and future orientation through design. She runs her own studio in Berlin.

Karen Pontoppidan, Jewellery artist, Academy of Fine Arts, Munich.
Born in Denmark in 1968, is one of the most renowned jewellery artists of her generation. In addition to numerous solo and group exhibitions in museums and galleries worldwide, Karen Pontoppidan is also a curator and author. She is trained as a designer of jewellery and hollowware, Schwäbisch Gmünd 1991, and graduated in 1998 in the class of Prof. Otto Künzli at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich. From 2006 to 2015 she was Professor of Jewellery and Corpus at Ädellab, Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. In 2015 Karen Pontoppidan was appointed Professor of Goldsmithing at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich. Karen Pontoppidan lives and works in Munich.


The decision to award the scholarship will be made by the whole jury. There is no legal right to a scholarship. The applicants will be advised in writing of the respective decision, whereby the grounds for the decision will not be explained.


Conditions:
The scholarship program is directed towards young international designers in the areas of jewellery, fashion, accessories, industrial and communication design as well as other design disciplines. Applicants must have completed studies at an university of applied sciences or university, must not be older than 35 years or must have completed their studies not longer than two years ago. To apply, a proposal for a project that can be implemented during the scholarship must be submitted. Interdisciplinary project proposals are welcome.
Language skills in German or English are required.

Additional to the online application it is possible to hand in samples of your work via post to: EMMA – Kreativzentrum Pforzheim »Designers in Residence«, Emma-Jaeger-Straße 20, 75175 Pforzheim Germany. Please insert a document with your name and your address.

We recommend that scholarship holders take out insurance at their own cost for dispatch. During their stay at the EMMA Creative Center the work which is submitted will be insured against loss and damage. On request products/models will be returned.


The deadline to apply is November 15, 2021. The application can be submitted only online.
