Intro
Designers in Residence is directed to designers in the areas of jewellery, fashion, accessory, industrial and communication design as well as other design disciplines. Interdisciplinary project proposals are welcome. In total, there will be three scholarships, the three best applications will be considered. Scholarship holders will stay in Pforzheim from April, 1 until June, 30 2023.
The creative center is housed on the premises of a former swimming pool designed in the art nouveau style next to the river Enz in Pforzheim. The creative center has an area of 3,000m2 and offers workshops and co-working workplaces, ateliers, offices and exhibition spaces. The town of Pforzheim is also characterized by an active creative scene which is focused on the area of design. Pforzheim University has established Pforzheim as a university town with an international reputation.


Scholarship benefits:
In total there will be three scholarships. Of all applications, the three best will be considered. The scholarship includes use of fully equipped workshop and coworking workplaces in the EMMA Creative Center in Pforzheim and free accommodation for the period of three months. As required, it will also be possible to use the workshop facilities of the Pforzheim University of Applied Sciences. In addition, each scholarship holder will receive a monthly support of 1,000 euros together with travel costs for the journey from and back to home. A special allowance will be made available for material costs. During the scholarship, there is the opportunity to network and exchange ideas with the jury and professors at Pforzheim University.
The results of the scholarship will be presented in an exhibition at the EMMA Creative Center in Pforzheim. Those accepting the scholarship are required to be in residence. The scholarship holder may only be absent for a maximum of 10 days. The period of residence in Pforzheim is from April 1 to June 30, 2023.

Corona note: The scholarship will be implemented locally taking into account the current Corona regulations. In case of an entry ban due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the scholarship can be completed online in individual cases.


Jury:
Louise Bennetts, fashion designer, researcher, lecturer MA Fashion Royal College of Art, London.
Louise completed her Fashion MA at the Royal College of Art in 2014, having previoulsy attended Edinburgh College of Art. She has designed costumes for choreographers including Hofesh Shechter, performing at The Place, Laban and Sadler’s wells. She worked in-house for 2 years for Roksanda and has spent over 5 years working in-house and freelance with Faye and Erica Toogood. She has worked on material research and development for artists Do Ho Suh and Cecilia Vicuña as well as bio-inspired design agency Faber Futures. Since September 2021 Louise has been working part-time as R&D Project Lead for ReWeave, a new textiles consultancy and manufacturer working with brands to create new fabrics from their own manufacturing waste. This role of funded by an R&D grant from the BFTT, with Academic Partner UAL. At the Royal College of Art Louise lectures on MA Fashion study platform ‘Future Fashion Systems’, and also contributes to academic research projects within both the Fashion Department, the Material Science Research Centre and the Future Fashion Factory. She designs and makes on a freelance basis, and also by commission on bespoke projects.


Frederike Kintscher, Industrial designer, Verband Deutscher Industrie Designer e.V., Berlin.
Studied Industrial Design at the Bergische Universität in Wuppertal and completed a Master of Science in Product Design at the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, CA, USA. She is involved in the Association of German Industrial Designers - VDID e.V. and is representing it in the Deutscher Designtag e.V. since 2018, as vice speaker in the Kulturrat e.V. and in the BEDA Bureau of European Design Associations, in the leadership of the Council for Europe/International Affairs of the Deutscher Designtag. She is an active campaigner for the themes of values, sustainability, and future orientation through design. She runs her own studio in Berlin.

Karen Pontoppidan, Jewellery artist, Academy of Fine Arts, Munich.
Born in Denmark in 1968, is one of the most renowned jewellery artists of her generation. In addition to numerous solo and group exhibitions in museums and galleries worldwide, Karen Pontoppidan is also a curator and author. She is trained as a designer of jewellery and hollowware, Schwäbisch Gmünd 1991, and graduated in 1998 in the class of Prof. Otto Künzli at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich. From 2006 to 2015 she was Professor of Jewellery and Corpus at Ädellab, Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. In 2015 Karen Pontoppidan was appointed Professor of Goldsmithing at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich. Karen Pontoppidan lives and works in Munich.


The decision to award the scholarship will be made by the whole jury. There is no legal right to a scholarship. The applicants will be advised in writing of the respective decision, whereby the grounds for the decision will not be explained.

The deadline to apply is November 15, 2022. The application can be submitted only online.
Confirmation of a scholarship will be made mid-December 2022. The application must be made in German or in English.
After a scholarship has been granted a further application is not permitted. There are no registration fees.
