SMCK On Reel, the first video festival inspired by jewelry and wearable art, invites artists, designers, crafters, curators, educators, gallerists and art professionals to answer this question and submit their video for the triple edition of SMCK On Reel at Romanian Jewelry Week 2023 (ROJW).
"If our civilization perishes, or dies in a nuclear accident or war, how will it re-emerge?"
This year's SMCK On Reel festival title “Civilization Rebooted” addresses today's most pressing issues such as climate change, environmental pollution, war, fear, death, totalitarianism, censorship, propaganda on the one hand, and recycling, renaissance, social justice, democracy, new values and new aesthetics on the other hand.
Create and send your video, reel or short film based on a personal narrative, story or statement that reflects the title/topic of Civilization Rebooted.
Accepted videos for SMCK On Reel / Civilization Rebooted will be screened during the triple edition of Romanian Jewelry Week in:
• 30 June – 2 July, Timisoara / ISHO European Capital of Culture '23.
• 17 – 31 August, Chisinau / the National Museum of History of Moldova - Chisinau.
• 4 – 8 October, Bucharest / ROJW in the National Library of Romania Bucharest.
In addition, all videos will be presented on the SMCK On Reel website. SMCK On Reel / Civilization Rebooted at Romanian Jewelry Week will also be featured in SMCK Magazine's #9 coming out in October 2023.
Individual artists, initiatives or groups working in the field of jewelry art, object, performance, fashion, textile, applied arts or crafts, are welcome to apply. Videos can be filmed with professional video equipment or simply with a mobile phone – what matters is the story or message.
Reels - the art of the moving image - unfold the artist's narrative and allow the public to better understand the maker's background, work and message. Reels and storytelling are particularly important to highlight the meaning of the objects presented.
More than 100 international jewelry artists, designers, art institutions and collectives participated in SMCK On Reel 2022 and 2023 – in Munich, Vilnius, Bucharest, Leipzig, Hamburg. They have created amazing video short films - artworks in their own right.
