From Bangkok to the North: Jewelry, Metalsmithing, and Pottery Workshop in Thailand with Oops+
Published: 06.01.2026

Focusing on enameling, metal-forming, chasing, and repoussé, this group of specialized workshops in Chiang Mai, Thailand provides you the opportunity to learn from skilled traditional and contemporary craftspeople in their home studios and Buddhist temples located in Thailand’s picturesque north. Thai craftspeople have perfected the art of enameling, silversmithing, and metalwork over numerous generations, and our program connects you with living masters while exploring the history and heritage of these culturally and religiously important practices.
Travel from Thailand’s vibrant capital city to the scenic north, stopping at breathtaking ancient ruins along the way. This trip begins by visiting art and cultural sites in Bangkok, such as the Grand Palace, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, and the Charoenkrung Creative District.
Heading north to Ayutthaya, we will visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of the former capital of the Kingdom of Siam and then head to the Chao Sam Phraya National Museum for a focused exploration of their impressive collection of ancient Siamese gold jewelry and objects. From Ayutthaya we will head to Sukhothai for the first workshop with indigenous masters in to learn metalsmithing techniques focused on fine silver-weaving, pattern-making, and enameling. Then we venture to Lampang, a center of handicraft production, where we will visit cultural sites and spend two days immersed in a ceramics workshop learning hand-building techniques for ceramic jewelry and small-scale pottery. We will also try using traditional Engobe-colored slip to decorate our creations.
The trip ends with a full day exploring Chiang Mai, the old capital of the Ancient Lanna Kingdom. See the old walled city, spectacular Buddhist temples, eat northern Thai street food for lunch and finish the day with a “khantoke” dinner that includes entertainment featuring dancing and martial arts.
Please join us for this exciting and unique opportunity to learn and make with Thai traditional metalsmiths!
