The forms are first cut out of sheet iron and shaped as desired. After the firing of the monochrome base enamel, the actual topcoat enamel is applied in various colors.
The characteristic, highly sought-after glassy coating is created by a short firing at high temperature (860° C) in an enamelling kiln. Due to kiln capacity, the size of the pieces is limited to a maximum of 10 x 10 cm.
Enamel has been known since the Bronze Age. Industrial enamel is still present in everyday life – for example, in the form of street, house or company signs, as well as robust cookware.
About the instructor:
Color has always been a central means of expression and a defining medium in the work of jewelry artist Fritz Maierhofer, who lives and works in Vienna. This is reflected in numerous series of objects and jewelry created from materials such as acrylic glass, Corian, and color-anodized aluminum.
For more than a decade, Fritz has also been intensively engaged in experimental work with industrial enamel, continually pushing the boundaries of contemporary jewelry practice. Widely regarded as a legendary figure in the international jewelry world, Fritz Maierhofer (*1941) has had a lasting influence on generations of artists and designers.
