Five-day masterclass in which jewellery designer Karl Fritsch takes participants through the complete lost-wax casting process.
On the occasion of the exhibition Rings That Rock, DIVA is pleased to host a five-day masterclass with internationally renowned jewellery artist Karl Fritsch.
During this intensive programme, Fritsch will guide participants through the complete lost-wax casting process. We have chosen a format in which a thorough understanding of the making process is central: from modelling in wax to building the casting tree, investing, burnout and ultimately casting the metal itself, using both vacuum and centrifugal casting techniques.
Two casting sessions are scheduled, allowing participants to go through the full process twice. Karl places strong emphasis on understanding what actually happens during casting, not simply operating machines, but grasping the process in all its facets. Demonstrations form an integral part of the workshop and may also include experimental techniques, such as potato casting.
Programme:
Day 1 – Introduction
Introduction to Karl Fritsch’s practice and his vision on casting and jewellery. Beginning work in wax, with attention to form, structure and technical possibilities.
Day 2 – Wax work
Further development and completion of the wax models. Building the casting tree and preparing the investment. Start of the burnout process.
Day 3 – Casting
Collective casting session. Evaluation of the casting process.
Day 4 – Preparation for second casting session
Development of new or adapted wax models. Reflection on the first casting results. Preparation and investing.
Day 5 – Second casting session & discussion
Second casting session. Finishing and group discussion of the results. Reflection on process, technique and applications within each participant’s own practice.
For whom and registration?
The masterclass is aimed at designers and makers who wish to deepen their technical knowledge and engage more consciously with the casting process within their own practice.
There is room for a maximum of 8 participants. Selection is based on motivation. Applicants are asked to briefly explain why they wish to participate and how the masterclass would strengthen their practice.
Applications are open until 24 May 2026 via the online form.
