Magpie's Jar. Mixed-Media Brooch with Suyu Chen

Our main emphasis will be on brooch-making using found objects. We will cover fundamental jewellery-making techniques, including fabrication, cold connections to secure objects, metal surface treatment, and a touch of soldering for pin mechanisms. We will also explore the use of adhesive on non-metal materials. All levels. Upper Metals studio.

About the artist:
Suyu Chen is a studio artist with experience in mixed-media jewellery. She is currently teaching at Rochester Institute of Technology. Her work has been exhibited internationally including in Brussels Jewellery Week (Belgium), Romania Jewellery Week (Romania), New York City Jewelry Week (USA), Cluster Jewellery Art Fair (UK), (Un) Avowable Secrets by Association Alliages (Germany and France). She was an artist resident at Baltimore Jewelry Center (USA), Haystack Mountain School of Craft (USA) and Penland Winter Residency (USA).

About the school:
Penland School of Craft is dedicated to helping people live creative lives. Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, Penland offers one-, two-, and eight-week workshops in books and paper, clay, drawing, glass, iron, metals, photography, printmaking and letterpress, textiles, and wood. The school also offers artists’ residencies, community collaboration programs, and a gallery and information centre.
