Intro
  Last days to apply

Modular Necklaces Workshop is a technical and conceptual course designed for people who already have a basic level of jewellery making skills.

After a theoretical lecture on necklaces, how they move, how they are worn, the connections and the clasps, the students will be guided in conceptual research of shapes. The aim of the course is to brainstorm and create unconventional solutions for a modular necklace. The students will find multiple solutions for connections, links and locks. Furthermore, students can extend the research to a plan a collection.

Workshop breakdown:
Day 1: Lecture on connections, links and clasps of necklaces, the parameters of wearability and examples of contemporary necklaces. Conceptual research on shapes by making paper and cardboard prototypes.

Day 2: Making cardboard prototypes and considering different lengths; choker, collier or long necklace. One-on-one discussions with students to find appropriate connections.

Day 3: Making design choices; which metals (copper or brass), try different connections and jumprings. Students who are ready can start making the chosen modular sample in sterling silver or other alloys (Shibuichi, Shakudo, Pure silver, etc.) and start with the final design.

DAY 4 and 5: Students continue making their necklace with individual discussions.

Other:
The students will get a booklet with illustrations of different connections, clasps, chains, pictures of modular jewellery and a technical explanation.
