DEADLINE: 11/08/2010

(...) During this course we will take a look at all the beautiful materials nature offers us to work with. We will concentrate on materials from the ocean like coral, shells, pearls, fishleather, skeleton and quills from the sea-urchin. (...)
Each of our workshops offers an extensive introduction to a specific
technique or method of design. You will be completely immersed into
the subject matter and will receive plenty of background information,
enabling you to continue working independently afterwards.
Some of the workshops are open to beginners, as no prior knowledge or skill is acquired. In the advanced workshops specific techniques are developed for which you already need to master the basic jewelry techniques.
The studio works with 1 regular lecturer (Lotte De Mey) and several visiting lecturers. All lecturers have several years of experience in the subject matter that they teach and have proven both their artistic and technical merits. With these standards we can offer you a unique range of high quality workshops.
During this course we will take a look at all the beautiful materials nature offers us to work with. We will concentrate on materials from the ocean like coral, shells, pearls, fishleather, skeleton and quills from the sea-urchin.
This course has a theoretical part and a practical part. First we will discuss all the materials and their qualities. You will learn how to process them and use them in jewelry by means of cold connections (glue, mounting, inlay work, riveting,...)
We will discuss old and contemporary jewelry designs to find out different possibilities to use the materials. After this, it's time to start designing. You can work on your designs (at home) after the theoretical part, and afterwards work on your chosen jewelry guided by the teacher in the studio.
You are free in your choice of materials. The basic materials (shells and pearls) are included in the price. Other materials, you can purchase in the studio. You bring your own silver. You will need silver plates and silver wire, depending on your own designs.
You should be familiar with the basic techniques: soldering with silver wire, sawing and filing to follow this course.
Number of people: 6
Language: English, Dutch.
