The workshop is about dealing with nature as a theme in working on contemporary jewelry. Nature can be the conceptual approach but also a great source of ´making´ material. As well as it is pieces of wood, stones, flowers, or sand, also, it is shapes, proportions, rhythms of mathematic sequences, and color nuances.
Terhi Tolvanen proposes to take an early morning walk to start the working days. Walking and observation are pleasant tools. Once back at the atelier, the work will be about making and transforming the found material into actual materialized ideas.

Those who garden engage with nature and with themselves. Gardening is an active dialogue with living matter. It is about locality and place, where we are, and can be practiced anywhere, regardless of convention. It brings together thinking, feeling, making and representing. The garden is a response to a culture in which mind and body, intellect and action are separated. It exchanges passive consumption for a skillful, creative and practical process, where thinking and manual labor go hand in hand.

This quote is from the catalog On the Necessity of Gardening, an ABC of Art, Botany and Cultivation, prefaced by Erik A. de Jong. For Terhi Tolvanen, the same is true of jewelry making. Jewelry is also an active dialogue with living materials, about who we are and where we are. During the workshop we will be able to contemplate these questions while walking along the nearby stream

The Teacher:
Terhi Tolvanen makes sculptural jewelry where she continuously reinvents nature. Her imaginary wearable trees and plants connect natural and man-made, questioning at the same time the role of control and freedom in this dialogue. Terhi was born in Helsinki, Finland in 1968 and lives and works today for more than ten years in France. After graduating as a silversmith in 1993 from the Design Institute in Lahti, FI she continued her education at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, NL. In 1997 she was invited to study at the Sandberg Institute, Amsterdam, NL for her Master of Arts degree, which she obtained in 1999. Right after her graduation, Terhi started exhibiting her work in many solo and group exhibitions internationally.

Her jewelry is in many important collections around the world such as the Schmuck Museum in Pforzheim, DE, Victoria&Albert Museum in London, UK, Coda Museum in Apeldoorn, NL. The latest acquisitions are made by the Musée Les Arts Décoratifs in Paris, FR and MAD New York, gift Porter Price Collection, USA.
