Participants will gain an understanding of how a line can be used as a design element transferable to sheet metal and the creative possibilities of this technique.
Using a variety of wire profiles and thicknesses participants own drawings and patterns will be imprinted a plate. Using sterling silver and dealing with fire scale when working with this technique will be looked at, along with learning how to patinate and seal recessed lines with liver of sulfur. Vicki will discuss her approach to generating ideas and forms using this process by showing examples of her own work. Students can do a series of experiments or work towards a self-directed outcome that utilizes the techniques and skills developed during the workshop. The opportunity to explore in depth the possibilities of this process will enable those with a passion for metal to have more skills to draw from when making their own work. The technique opens many possibilities for the invention.
Techniques demonstrated and taught will include: cutting sheet metal, annealing, wire bending/forming/cutting using pliers and jigs, roller printing using the rolling mill, solder inlay, distortions, soldering and patination using liver of sulfur.
Date: September 8th – 9th
Time: 10:00 - 17:30 h.
Where: San W Studio in Shanghai.

Vicki Mason holds a Master of Philosophy (Research), Gold and Silversmithing from the Australian National University in Canberra, a diploma in Craft Design for jewellery form Otago Polytechnic School of Art and a Bachelors of Arts from University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand. She has had numerous solo and group exhibitions all around the world, her work can be seen in collections such as Powerhouse Museum, Sydney, Australia and Grundy Art Gallery, Blackpool, UK and among others she has received grants and awards like National Contemporary Jewellery Award, First prize: Jewellery using non precious materials in 2006.
Materials
Brass and copper sheet and wire will be provided along with steel and iron binding wire. If students wish to work with precious metals (e.g. sterling silver or gold sheet) then they need to bring this to class. Participants may choose to provide some of their own materials/consumables, for example findings (attachments) etc. if they wish to turn samples/self-directed project into jewellery to wear.

This workshop would best suit an experienced creative practitioner with a solid set of jewellery or metal working skills.
Other: Workshop participants will need to bring pen and paper and other materials for doing design work as well as some of their own drawings. We will be soldering so please bring solder for use with silver and gold.
