Between Città Studi and Ortica, in that part of Milan rapidly revived from the post-war period, where factories and mills merged into the urban fabric, Archivio Negroni finds its place as keeper of the historical and cultural heritage of the workshop founded by Edoardo Negroni. Born at the dawn of the ‘50s, the workshop has produced burin engraved artworks: rollers for rolling mills, punches, and moulds that reproduce elements of classical silverware and many other ornamental details.
The newly restored open space, today conceived for temporary events and meetings, looks towards a wide glass wall that reveals the archive full of precious engraved rollers, drawings and samples that, together with the historic rolling mills and the manufacturing tools, tell us the story of a world of arts and crafts yet to be rediscovered. This is because the workshop aims at a relaunch as a dynamic and active “reservoir” rich in information and practical references. A new project of preservation, valorization and promotion of this heritage in craftsmanship and entrepreneurial culture is in the process, and the upcoming years will see Archivio Negroni growing into a space that will be more and more available to an audience of experts and enthusiasts.
Veiled by a wall of glass, the archive and the studio represent a subtle but evocative presence of a place that is still alive and connects the past with the present, conferring an atmosphere and providing quality to a location that does not go unnoticed.
From serial production to custom making
This is the expression that sums up the direction Archivio Negroni workspace is taking.
The workshop, born in the time of both craftsmanship and industrial manufacture metamorphosis, has witnessed their social and technical transformation.
On one hand, since the 90s, Eliana Negroni (the daughter of founder Negroni, master engraver) has been able to create a dialogue between the traditional skills, both mechanical and manual, and today’s digital technologies; on the other, the transformation of practices and, as a result, the decline of traditional commissions, have made Eliana face the task of passing on this material culture.
Attrezzeria Negroni, the Archivio Negroni’s workspace, is a journey through those visible and material aspects of last century Italian craftmanship culture. Traditional machinery and rolling mills can still run for demonstration purposes and they are meticulously kept. Together with the archive, which contains the precious inventory of chisels, molds and decorative patterns, manual tools and burins for refined manual finishes, all tell the story of the transformation of mechanical engraving techniques for silver and goldsmithing and other metal ornaments decorations.
Active in the international network of art jewellery and deeply involved with AGC (Italian association for contemporary jewellery), today Eliana Negroni relaunches the workshop in a cultural project which enlightens the archive and the inherited know-how.
Today, the Archivio Negroni’s workspace becomes a system available to specialists and public audience, to be rediscovered also with new limited series productions, or exclusive and custom-made commissioning that embody the charm and beauty of craftsmanship, through art, sculpture and mechanics.
The small size in structure allows a flexible adaptation to the current situation connected to health safe conditions and will enhance the organization of both live and virtual activities. Distance will be an important though relative issue.

The design concept for this project is to create a simple, peaceful and orderly spatial arrangement, as simplicity is not only aesthetic value but has a moral connotation that reveals the inner qualities and essence of materials and objects.

Through the exposure to the elements causing a layer of rust to form, the signs of time passing is added to the hands of the craftsman producing an addictive result as jewelry could ferment and ripe beneath the earth; in Japanese the word for sleep and fermentation is the same, implying a restorative nature of time in both cases. / from interview with K.Toporski, Metalsmith vol.36-3
