Chiaroscuro, Italian for light-dark, in art is the use of strong contrasts between light and dark, usually bold contrasts affecting a whole composition.
Artist list
Märta Mattsson, Tanel Veenre
What is the relationship between dark and light?
What we see and what is hidden?
Is jewellery a shadow of inner light?
Fragmented constellations of our minds?
Tanel Veenre & Märta Mattsson are two Nordic artists working with melancholy and the blurred line between beauty and death, gloomy urges and luminous hopes. They explore their own vulnerability as human beings and it`s reflections in art. CHIAROSCURO is an invite to take a step into their somber dreams and personal mythologies. The darkness in there is so bright.
My jewellery deals with the tension that lies between attraction and repulsion. I take seemingly inappropriate materials, making ordinary and familiar objects seem extraordinary and unfamiliar. In a world where not many new and exotic breeds are discovered I use dead creatures in my pieces to evoke wonder. The creatures are transformed and reborn; given a new life as objects of astonishment. In my series Wings I have transformed the wings from cicadas into new uncanny beings.
/ Märta Mattsson
I would like to present in Sao Paulo selection of my dark minded pieces. Few earlier works but mostly new series which explore darkest sides of beauty and eroticism. I will reveal my personal mythologies with dancing seahorses, flaming hearts and nightflowers. Happy melancholy is probably most familiar state of mind for me. Painted by gloomy Estonian twilight.
