Madola, Victòria Rabal
There are points in an artist’s career when creation is no longer an act of investigation, but becomes a way of inhabiting the world.

After decades of work, hits and misses, constant experimentation and absolute dedication to the craft, there comes a time when one’s hands seem to be a step ahead of one’s thoughts. Technique is no longer an aim, but is now part of the body itself. The knowledge built up over a whole lifetime becomes intuitive.

This is the space occupied by the works of Madola and Victòria Rabal, both of whom have received the National Crafts Award of the Government of Catalonia. Each of them is of a significance that transcends any such accolade. Their true contribution lies in having built up a wholly personal and contemporary artistic idiom. Neither ceramics nor paper represent the purpose of their work; they are the means through which they explore form, space, memory and time.

Their works are no longer born out of the need to prove anything. Nor do they seek to respond to the trends of their time. They emerge from a much deeper place: from a freedom won after a whole life dedicated to creation.

Far from disappearing, doubt adopts a different nature. It no longer questions the artist’s capacity, but feeds curiosity. Chance shifts from being an accident to become an ally. Matter suggests, the hand listens, and the work emerges out of a dialogue built up over the course of decades.

At this point of creative maturity, each gesture contains a remarkable economy of means. All that is superfluous has fallen away. What remains is simply the essence.
Each piece condenses thousands of hours of work, countless decisions and knowledge that no longer needs to explain itself. The learning of years has turned into intuition, allowing the sincerest expression of a gaze to flourish.

Madola turns ceramics into memory, landscape and symbol. Her silent volumes evoke walls, doors, horizons and traces of civilisations, inviting us to reflect on permanence, emptiness and the passage of time.

Victòria Rabal finds in paper a realm of inexhaustible exploration. Through minutely worked construction and repetition, she transforms an apparently fragile material into structures of powerful sculptural presence. Light, shadow and rhythm turn her works into spaces for contemplation, where emptiness is as much the focus as matter itself.

Their artistic idioms are profoundly different, but both share the same attitude towards creation: absolute loyalty to their own voice. They do not use matter to illustrate an idea; they think through it. There is in their works no separation between thought and execution: the creative process forms an inseparable part of the work.

This exhibition brings together two profoundly personal worlds, reminding us that true craft does not involve simply mastering a material, but allowing that material to retain its capacity to surprise us, even after having spent a whole life with it.

In an era dominated by speed, constant production and immediacy, a contemplation of these works represents an invitation to freeze time. What we find here is increasingly scarce: the serenity offered only by experience and the conviction of those who no longer need to pursue an identity, because they already found it long ago. The beauty that emerges from their works is born not out of perfection, but out of the authenticity of a whole life spent watching, understanding and transforming matter.

Every great work of art arises out of a paradox: the greater the mastery of technique, the less visible it becomes. The craft itself then no longer attracts attention, and matter is no longer a challenge, but is transformed into thought. It is precisely at this point that only art remains.

This may be one of the greatest privileges of artistic creation: arriving at a point when freedom emerges from knowledge itself. When experience ceases to impose itself as a demonstration, and begins to reveal itself as intuition, emotion and truth.

Madola and Victòria Rabal represent that exceptional place. The place where the hands no longer seek a path because matter itself begins to show it. When matter already knows the way.

Opening: Thursday, November 8, starting at 18:30 pm.
