In the realm of contemporary design, jewellery has long transcended its conventional role as mere ornamentation, emerging as a vital medium through which to interrogate identity, address socio-cultural discourse, and articulate artistic expression. Shining on the Stage: International Exhibition for Contemporary Jewellery was conceived within this context, with the intent to investigate and showcase the multiplicity of methodologies in contemporary jewellery practice.
Artist list
Morvarid Alavifard, Jonathan Boyd, Maisie Broadhead, Zoe Clark, Sally Collins, Katharina Dettar, Zheng Dixin, Zhang Fan, Teng Fei, Lucie Gledhill, Tan Haiyi, Adam Henderson, Ren Kai, Shen Linyan, Yaning Liu, Lois Lo, Shi Minghong, Ho Ni, Bette Nunneley, Wu Peng, Zhu Pengfei, Liu Qiwei, Li Sang, Roxanne Simone, SynGro, Adi Toch, Wu Tong, Max Warren, Dai Xiang, Liu Xiao, Xu Xuan, Zhao Yi, Wang Yihan, Xu Yin, Zhang Yizhi, Zhao Yuchen, Tao Zelin
The exhibition seeks to illuminate the intricate and nuanced relationship between the human body and materiality, while unveiling the boundless potential of jewellery as it intersects with both artistic and design disciplines.
The exhibition brings together a distinguished roster of renowned jewellery artists, designers, and collectives from around the world, including Chinese artist Teng Fei, British artist group FOLD(s), and other prominent figures from both China and abroad. Through diverse explorations—including the innovative application of materials, dynamic intersections between new media and jewellery, and the contemporary reinvention of traditional craftsmanship—the exhibition critically examines the plurality of approaches within current jewellery creation. It aspires to map out the evolving landscape of conceptual and practical inquiry that defines the field today. Beyond a compelling visual experience, the exhibition offers a reflective engagement with pressing questions of society, culture, and self-perception.
More than a presentation of artistic adornments, Shining on the Stage positions itself as a discursive and academic platform for investigating emergent creative strategies in jewellery design. It invites audiences to re-examine the very essence of jewellery—its purpose, its performativity, and its intimate relationship with the human form—while expanding the horizon of what jewellery can be. Through this exhibition, viewers are immersed in a multilayered narrative of contemporary jewellery language, and witness a luminous performance of material, meaning, and imagination.
Art Director: CAI Xingyun
Project Curators: Adi Toch-FOLD(s), Mingze Zhang
Organizer: JCC International Contemporary Jewellery Center
Co-organizer: FLYING BLIND, Prince Bay Garden City Villa
The exhibition runs until the 30th of August 2025.
