In the words of Montse Frisach, curator of Unexpected Visits:
This brooch is more than a piece of jewellery. It stands as evidence of how contemporary jewellery can move naturally alongside artistic disciplines that have been, unfairly, considered major, such as sculpture. The piece is by Wendy McAllister, a renowned American metalsmith who created it for an exhibition on alchemy (The Alchemical Egg ) that was presented at Hannah Gallery in 2017. The title of the work, Nigredo, refers to the first stage in the transmutation of matter, associated with decay and the dissolution of the prima materia. This is why an immanent chaos dwells within the piece, and yet so much beauty as well. Here, it stands beside another kind of jewel: books. Its form also resonates with the chaotic head that Picasso drew in the book by Palau i Fabre, Picasso i Catalunya.
