SIERAAD Art Fair: looking, experiencing, enjoying, buying and coming back next year!
The 13th edition of SIERAAD Art Fair, held in the Amsterdam Gashouder from 6th to the 9th November, recorded a brilliant result.
According to fair director Astrid Berens the influence of the recession was negligible. “It is remarkable that many visitors had reserved a budget beforehand. Most of them have been to SIERAAD before and come with the idea of buying something. Often they save up for this during an entire year”.
60% of the visitors are women and 40% are men. We find that couples mostly come during the weekend, and then it becomes obvious that men too enjoy looking around at this fair”. The average time visitors spend at SIERAAD is 4.5 hours. The direct contact with the designers is one of the most attractive aspects for visitors. The enormous variety in styles, ranging from the more traditional to explicitly artistic and experimental, also forms an inspiration for each visitor to find something to his own taste.

For the organisation of SIERAAD Art Fair, EMB&B Events, the location has obvious advantages. The Westergasfabriek complex is suffused with creativity and dynamics. This is precisely the place where designers from all over the world feel at home and which forms a beautiful backdrop for their work.

SIERAAD doesn't only draw a crowd that really saves up a whole year to spent it all on SIERAAD. It's also the place to be for fashionista's, press and tv (as participants of SIERAAD feature in a specialised series on national broadcasting), museum directors, curators and collectors.

It is not unusual for SIERAAD Art Fair to receive compliments, but this year the public was remarkably generous with their praise. In what respects then was this year’s edition, in Amsterdam from November 6th through to the 9th, different from previous years? Looking back on the fair we will try to find an answer to this question.

In spite of the economic slump and the occasionally tempestuous and wet fall weather we had once again more visitors than last year. SIERAAD is an occasion for connoisseurs and aficionados of all ages and all walks of life: in other words, a niche. SAF jewellery does not focus on the masses. Good news, therefore, that once again more people have ‘discovered’ us. The majority did indeed go home with a piece of jewellery 7 out of 10 visitors. A selection from the arguments:  because it matches a certain item of clothing (cardigan/dress/coat), because people had saved for it, in order to add lustre to a special occasion, people purchased something they regretted not having bought last year, because it is worth the money, because SIERAAD offers an international selection, because it is such a beautiful fair, because jewellery makes great presents.

Atmosphere
The appearance of SIERAAD was partly determined by the monumental floral arrangements of Ten Kate - this year consisting of exuberant, tightly arranged brightly-coloured gladioli. The layout of the fair was also to many people’s liking: a central axis clearly outlined by a conspicuous orange carpet was reserved for the exhibition of the international design contest New Traditional Jewellery 2014 – CONFRONTATIONS. The exhibition as backbone of the fair created a break and a point of reference: people took ample time to examine all the pieces and to read the motivations of the artists. The axis separated the participants very naturally into two halves. The catering terrace of DeBorrelFrabriek formed an ideal break before visiting the second half of the fair. Talking about catering: thé hit of this fair was undoubtedly the carrot cake.

Stands
This 13th edition of SAF numbered no fewer than 106 stands (we do not want to grow much more..) with 225 designers from 33 countries.  The variety was enormous and SAF remains a leading cross section of international contemporary jewellery design. This was also apparent from the interest of the media. It was not just the trade journals, glossies and dailies that turned up at SIERAAD. During the fair, camera teams of AVRO/Tros were walking around for Kunstuur as well as of the EO for BlueBlood. These items can be viewed in the links below.

Item (first item 00.39) about SIERAAD Art Fair at KunstUur, Dutch television.

Coming Saturday SIERAAD ART FAIR will on Blauw Bloed van zaterdag 29 November a.s. (NPO2 - 19.30 uur).

Participants
Of course, they are what SIERAAD is all about!! Our objective was for SIERAAD to grow into an important presentation platform and that this has now materialized , at a national as well as at an international level, is obvious from the total number of participants. The atmosphere among these artists/designers, the large degree of collegiality and mutual solidarity is unique, we feel. The large variety makes the work of others a source of inspiration for many, resulting in many new designs and starting points next year. In short, SIERAAD motivates and inspires!! Some designers have already submitted their applications!

Conclusion
Time and again it has been shown that the public has a great deal of appreciation for getting acquainted with different ways of looking at jewellery design, use of materials, techniques and inspiration. Crucial in all this is the personal encounter and dialogue with you. It makes the purchase of your work so much more than just a purchase: for the future wearer it is often a special experience. The fact that visitors spent hours at SAF speaks volumes. They took all the time in the world to decide which item their savings were going to be spent on. Therefore, for you SAF is a unique and vital platform to promote your sales and your PR.

·  A great many galleries from abroad:a.o; Germany, Belgium, Curaçao, Greece, Brasil, Italy, Spain, Latvia, France, USA, England.
·  Many participants received commissions. Even foreign participants have set up meetings in their workshops with potential clients.
·  A number of Dutch jewellers stopped by, who want to carry ‘lines’ designed by our participants.
·  At SIERAAD you are your own PR, something like this: ‘I exist and I am a serious designer, I got in because I have a certain level, otherwise I would not be allowed to be here”. You can sell, be invited to exhibitions and get commissions.
·  It should be clear what a piece of jewellery looks like on a body. Whether you wear a different piece of your own jewellery every hour or whether you hang large pictures of your work shown by a model on the rear wall: make it visual!
·  1.5% more visitors compared to last year.
·  On average, 7 out of 10 visitors bought something at the fair.
·  It is clear that both nationally and internationally SIERAAD is a renowned and established platform to present your designs.
·  Apart from the commerical goals, SIERAAD is also an annual event where colleages meet and friendship and the exchange of knowledge and experience predominate.

Invest in your own professionalism!

1. Picture this: one hotspot to meet your three target groups face to face. If it sounds too good to be true, you haven’t participating at SIERAAD Art Fair in Amsterdam yet.
*. the visitors; over 6800-7400 loving jewellery consumers
*. the professionals; your business contacts and people from the cultural world (galerists, shops etc..)and
*. the press; stylists, journalists etc.
2. During these four days you can considerably develop your network.
3. Direct contact between artist and (potential) client leads to a proven increase in sales.
4. SIERAAD is a fair with style, with a clever mix of very diverse but top-quality work, which guarantees some inspiring and pleasant days with colleagues.
5. If you think the stands too expensive, have a close look at what you get in return and put a price tag on it – the high quality of the surroundings that you are part of during four days, all the publicity, the catalogue, etc.

Here too the saying holds: nothing ventured, nothing gained.
