17:55 Talk by Hatutamelen.

Chun Chang (1989) is a Taiwanese artist based in Germany. She holds an MFA in Gemstones and Jewellery from Hochschule Trier, Campus Idar-Oberstein, and a BA in Jewellery from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. In 2025, she was awarded the prestigious Marzee Graduate Prize, and in 2026, she is the artist-in-residence at the Françoise van den Bosch Foundation in Amsterdam.
For her upcoming talk, Chun Chang will delve into her jewellery and sculptural practice. During her residency, she is exploring the potential of wood carving as a language for contemporary jewellery and small-scale sculpture. Drawing inspiration from Japanese netsuke, she examines how functional forms evolve into cultural carrier, and how these ideas can be reinterpreted in a contemporary context.
While in Amsterdam, Chun is also researching museum collections, with a particular focus on objects that reveal histories of cross-cultural exchange. The presence of Asian artefacts in Dutch collections, shaped by centuries of trade and contact, provides a rich framework for her artistic investigation.
Hatutamelen (1980), a pseudonym for James Noya, is a Moluccan-Dutch artist. He began his artistic practice with woodcarving and building Moluccan tifa drums. He has gradually developed his skills in several disciplines, such as linoleum printing, painting, and making sculptures and jewellery from wood and ceramics.
He draws his inspiration from Moluccan symbols and motifs.
His work is often guided by intuition. Through a creative process based on his love and fascination for woodworking and the knowledge of his craft within his family—including his ancestors—he creates contemporary interpretations of traditional heritage, often Moluccan objects.
In 2018, Hatutamelen co-founded the art collective Awareness Moluccan Identity (AMI). One of the goals of the collective is to protect and revive Moluccan heritage
