Intro
Cloisonné and basse-taille are two historic enamelling techniques distinguished by their use of structure, surface and colour. Both processes, rooted in traditional metalworking, continue to be explored within contemporary jewellery and object making.
In this online talk with the Goldsmiths’ Centre, Linda Connelly introduces the principles and processes behind each technique. Cloisonné involves the use of fine wires to define areas of enamel, while basse-taille relies on engraved or carved surfaces beneath translucent layers to reveal depth and pattern.

Drawing on her own practice, the session will outline materials, methods and applications, alongside examples of contemporary work. The talk forms part of the Techniques in Focus series, which examines specialist processes within jewellery and silversmithing.
