Intro
Baltimore Jewelry Center is seeking a Studio and Program Manager who is passionate about metalsmithing, art jewelry, craft education, and art education. The ideal candidate enjoys engaging with people in a variety of settings from the studio to community events, conferences and more. The ideal candidate is an excellent communicator who enjoys supporting users of our space with the ultimate goal of leading everyone towards an independent studio practice.
Job starts from early September 2021.
At the Baltimore Jewelry Center, we are building a vibrant creative community for new and established metal and jewelry artists. As an educational 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we are on a mission to educate and inspire Baltimore and beyond through our programming, exhibitions, and community & educational outreach.

We aim to reconnect Baltimore to its rich history of metalsmithing and jewelry, and increase awareness of contemporary metalsmithing and jewelry as an art form. Our shared values guide us in building an environment where metalsmiths and art jewelers innovate and elevate each other through collaboration with different perspectives, openness, and respect, enriching our community. Together, we’re empowering metalsmiths and art jewelers to evolve the field through study, practice, and leadership.

The Baltimore Jewelry Center staff is a team of 4 individuals working in a fast-paced and dynamic environment who support a close community of artists and makers. Our studio is a vibrant space with a robust lineup of ongoing programs. The staff works closely together to plan and implement the day-to-day programming and functioning of the BJC. The BJC is a space where teaching and learning is central to all that we do. Studio and Program Managers lead, teach, and manage. We’re seeking a Studio and Program Manager who is passionate about metalsmithing, art jewelry, craft education, and art education. The ideal candidate enjoys engaging with people in a variety of settings from the studio to community events, conferences, and more. The ideal candidate is an excellent communicator who enjoys supporting users of our space with the ultimate goal of leading everyone towards an independent studio practice. Focused on the programming and daily management of the BJC, our Studio and Program Managers are a primary representative of the BJC for the community and have a big impact.

We’re looking for someone with the skills and experience to manage day-to-day student and renter activity, including providing one-on-one assistance and guidance as needed and managing our studio on a daily basis. Your office space exists in the studio so that you are observing the studio and its users and are available to support the various needs that arise. This is a full-time position, and you’ll report directly to the Director. You’ll need to have a strong background in metalsmithing or art jewelry with a broad set of skills that are required for running a studio. You also have depth in a particular area of practice that will inspire staff and students. You will have superlative verbal and written communication skills, organizational skills, and enjoy helping others.

Application Process
Applicants must submit a full PDF application packet via email to info@baltimorejewelrycenter.org no later than July 15, 2021. All documents should be included in one PDF file (if possible). Full applications must include:
  • A 1-2 page cover letter detailing why you want to work as a Studio and Program Manager at the Baltimore Jewelry Center, and why you believe your qualifications and past experience make you the ideal candidate for the position. Please speak to our various programs and initiatives.
  • In addition to your cover letter, respond to the following in three pages or less:
                    - Reflect on your past career experiences and your long-term professional and career goals. Where does this job fit into your personal trajectory?
                    - Tell us about a time when you created or led a project or initiative; we are interested in knowing how you take initiative, how you take responsibility, how you utilize resources, how you work with others, and you hold yourself accountable. 
                    - Tell us about a situation when you faced a significant professional or creative challenge. What did you do to overcome the challenge and the results?  
  • Your resume or CV which must list work experience and education, as well as related artistic experience (exhibitions, etc.)
  • 2-3 professional references (a list of names, telephone numbers, addresses, and email addresses). References should be individuals who have supervised or mentored you in a position similar to the studio and program manager position or other managerial/leadership position, or who otherwise have experience working with you in such positions.
  • Digital portfolio of 12-20 examples of your work (link or pdf with a maximum size of 10MB). 
  • Optional: Digital portfolio of one of or some combination of the following (8-20 images)  (link or pdf with a maximum size of 10MB)  
                    - Work made by students, artists, makers you have taught or assisted
                    - Any exhibitions or curatorial experience you have had 
                    - Any graphic design work or media you may have completed (fliers, websites, etc.)
                    - Any social media campaigns or content you have created

Based on their review of all applications received by the July 15, 2021 deadline, the Baltimore Jewelry Center will select candidates to participate in an interview process, which may occur in person or via zoom. If necessary, a second round of interviews may occur wherein select candidates will demonstrate suitability for the position via a day of onsite shadowing (including interacting with and supporting students).
