DEADLINE: 15/07/2026

During this 3 day-course you will explore and experiment with different casting processes and use them in an unconventional way. Traditional techniques like sand, water, ice and cuttlefish casting will be taught and used as the starting point of your creative journey.
Price: £490
3-Day Course with Kelvin Birk
Date: 17 – 19 July from 10am to 4pm
About the course:
Through casting onto different materials, you will be encouraged to ‘cast outside the box’ and take the process literally outside the studio, to cast into gaps, cracks and other items in the street. You will be using different metals such as pewter and silver.
You will explore a range of techniques and metals, discovering how they can shape your creative process and lead to the creation of distinctive jewellery and small objects.
Overview on the course
- Day 1: Introduction to sand and cuttlefish casting, with hands-on experiments exploring texture, form, and the behaviour of molten metal.
- Day 2: Push the process further by experimenting with different materials, trapping objects, and exploring unconventional casting methods.
- Day 3: Refine your ideas through continued experimentation, then finish and develop selected pieces from your casting results.
Who is the course for?
Jewellers, artists, craft practitioners, and students looking to explore new approaches to making, experiment with materials, and broaden their creative practice. Previous jewellery-making experience is helpful but not essential.
Is there anything else I need to bring?
All tools and nearly all materials are provided. You can bring some extra precious metal if you wish. You will need to bring some ‘masters’ to duplicate and items to be trapped. More details about this will be sent out after you’ve enrolled.
Health & Safety
We will provide standard health and safety supplies like aprons, gloves and googles. Make sure you wear closed sturdy shoes and appropriate workshop clothing.
Please read the Terms & Conditions before booking the course.
About the tutor:
Kelvin J. Birk, K2’s founder and course leader, a master of sand casting with over a decade of teaching experience. He holds a Master’s degree with distinction in Silversmithing, Jewellery and Allied Arts from Sir John Cass.
