Statement
Idea. I create objects to wear arising in particular from intuitions and ideas. My collections of rings, for instance, include the succulent rings - containing little plants to water, the blob rings - plastic entanglement withholding objets trouvés. Among the necklaces, instead, are the wavelet chains and the rockies chain, all in silver or the bijoux-chocolat - jewels made of chocolate.Materials. I make my jewels not only with precious metals but also and above all with materials like plastic, wood, paper, sugar…I like to work with raw materials, to reach an insight and to get hints from them to carry on further trials. I’m convinced that every material has its own identity and my aim is to discover it and reveal it.
Leitmotiv. The main theme of my search, the visible tie between all my jewels, is organicità, the magmatic character of material and the sensuousness of surfaces.
Humour. My work supposes engagement but involve also game and fun; often people say about my jewels that they are playful and ironic. The little mouse who peeps out from a brooch, the giant marshmallow necklaces, the image of Diabolik who seems to break out from a bracelet, the marabou's feather on a ring are just a few examples of this aspect of my jewels.
Ergonomics. The making of my jewels inspire me to create ornaments to wear; although exuberant in forms and dimensions, they take into account wearability, they consider evaluating weights and balances against human morphology (incredible blob rings, deinos rings, bigolì…).
Mutation. I have tried to explored different paths, creating for instance “ephemeral projects”, that I like to define “changing”: candycandles – wax monoliths meant to melt and release a silver ring, bijoux-chocolat - necklaces formed by great dark chocolate pearls starting to melt when they get in contact with the skin, free.zero - jewels made of snow that slowly turn into water.
Performance. During the last few years I have travelled to different towns with “tempting” suitcases full of candies and other delicacies: I create live glucogioielli threading gummy candies that can be perforated with a thread and, selecting flavoured bon-bons, I create jewels that people can wear.
-------------------
In 1990, after attending the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, Barbara Uderzo started her work with jewels, both in the artistic and in the industrial design field.
Since then, she constantly carries out researches and experiments, creating unique pieces that are exhibited in the circuit of European Art Galleries and published in various magazines and books.
She works in cooperation with different gold jewellery companies, designing and creating prototypes of new precious collections. Besides, she combines her designing and creation activity with teaching and training in design schools.
Interested in multiple aspects of contemporary life, she conducts experiments with different materials, ranging from craft techniques to industrial technologies, then she enriches her work with artistic performances.
The materials from which she draws inspiration are, apart from metals, plastics, wood, paper or ephemeral materials like chocolate, sugar, ice and snow.
Her work focuses mainly on the conceptual aspect of creation: the idea of the project becomes an object related to the body. The jewel is a perceptual and sensory experience (bijoux-chocolat & glucogioielli, free.zero), a starting point for transforming events (candycandles, succulent rings), a narrative scenery in which miniature objects start to speak (blob rings) or else a silent witness of different geological and mineralogical findings (mineralogica, chains).
She lives and works between Creazzo (Vicenza) and Milan.
