Ryan Seng

Bio

Ryan is a Detroit-based artist and graduated with a Master of Fine Arts in Metalsmithing from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. His work was chosen as the 2026 Cranbrook Art Museum Graduate Degree Purchase Award Winner. Prior to Cranbrook, Ryan worked as a menswear designer and studied at the Parson’s School of Design.

Statement

Mementos investigates how utilitarian objects from everyday life - brushes, ribbons, braids -function as ritualistic and intimate objects, carriers of emotional memory and bodily experience. This body of work reflects three years of material discovery and exploration, tracing the accumulation of experiences and influences gathered during my time at Cranbrook Art Academy, Idar Oberstein, and Limoges. 
 
Working with a wide range of materials including porcelain, rubber, ebony and goat hair, I approach each piece as a carefully crafted ensemble in which unexpected material combinations create sensual and inviting tactile contrasts.

As a previous fashion designer, my closet mirrors my identity. A collection of memories, each garment carries the emotional residue from different life events. Jewelry holds more of this power. Unlike clothing, I consciously chose to adorn my body with precious objects that can reflect and communicate my desires, values, and life experiences.  

Through the tension of unexpected combinations of materials, a seduction can begin; the jewelry tempts my audience to desire to touch and feel it against their skin.
