Bio
Wiebke Pandikow is a German/Finnish jewellery artist living and working in Helsinki, Finland. She completed vocational training as an artisan for goldsmithing before getting a BA in jewellery design from the Institute of Design in Lahti, Finland. She also spent 10 months of exchange at Toyama University, Takaoka campus in Japan, working with traditional Japanese lacquer. Her work is based in the patience and diligence of craftsmanship, but focused on the utilisation of plastic waste in order to criticise consumption habits while showing different material possibilities.Statement
Since 2014 I have been working with plastic bags, developing unique techniques to rework this waste material with the help of a clothes iron and a soldering iron. More recently I have also started to utilise techniques from the ancient history of basketry as well as old craft traditions used in Finland. My process is grounded in diligence, patience and repetition - slowly formed tacit knowledge embedded in the making hands.Using our hands to work fibres from our immediate natural environment, gathering and creating and slowly building up skills over generations - in other words, craft - is deeply human. Hunters and gatherers have lived skillfully off their immediate environment for thousands of years, using materials directly at hand. Today, the materials at hand though, have changed, the environment irreparably altered.
In a world amidst difficult transitions, I want to encourage people to perceive a waste material from a different viewpoint. To see possibilities and beauty in change and to find resilience and enjoyment in re-discovering old knowledge and making do with what we can find close at hand, sometimes discarded under our feet.
