Bio
Wiebke Pandikow is a German jewellery artist living and working in Helsinki, Finland. She completed vocational training as an artisan for goldsmithing before getting a BA in jewellery design from the Institute of Design in Lahti, Finland. She also spent 10 months of exchange at Toyama University, Takaoka campus in Japan, working with traditional Japanese lacquer. Her work is based in the traditions of craftsmanship but focused on unusual materials to invent these traditions anew.Statement
Since 2014 I have been working with plastic bags, developing a technique to turn used plastic bags into jewelry art. The time-consuming process involves a clothes iron and a soldering iron and happens by hand from start to finish, is very much grounded in the diligence and patience of traditional craftwork.Without the ubiquitous plastic, our civilization could hardly have become what it is today, but at the same time, it is a burden on the environment with far-reaching consequences. Especially plastic bags are an obvious symbol of mindless consumerism and a throw-away society. This makes them so interesting for me to work with. I strive to transform this waste material into something beautiful. To draw attention to something visually and tactilely pleasing in order to then reveal the material and the ecological weight attached to it, all the while questioning what makes something precious.
I propose that this material is, in fact, precious. It is its potential to be so very harmful as a waste that makes it so. Also, there are many applications where simply no other material than plastic will do. In my own work, the malleability of plastics and their durability is a boon.
With the diligence and time it takes to craft this 'waste' into jewelry art I want to draw attention to the material in general, its positive and negative aspects, and question how it is so often thoughtlessly misused.
