Intro
Based in Yorkshire, England and educated at The Glasgow School of Art, Faye is an award-winning designer who aims to challenge perceptions of material and create wearable objects that hold a sense of harmony despite being created from materials of contrasting textures, qualities and origin. Faye is a participant in the current Hothouse programme run by Crafts Council UK.

Statement

Originally trained in textiles, and with over thirteen years’ experience designing highly tactile fabrics for fashion and interiors, I now apply my perpetual curiosity for surface and materials to create bold pieces of art jewellery which investigate the properties of man-made and natural materials through construction and embellishment. I love to allow the viewer to question their own perceptions of materials and combinations when looking or handling my wearable objects.

Every piece of jewellery is handcrafted in my workshop and created in a very intuitive way; in the case of my brooches I begin with one component such as ebony or hand-casted damar and allow the piece to evolve by playfully merging it with contrasting materials such as matte linoluem, glossy propolis and precious metals. I have always been a collector of materials that pique my curiosity and I rarely come home from a walk without something I have found in my pocket. I actively seek and gather waste materials from other makers that are otherwise discarded, scraps from industry or source materials which are under celebrated such as formica or rubber tubing used in medicine and hospitality. Battling with found colours along the way only adds to the challenge of combining inherent components that differ in weight, structure and origin into an intriguing object which is tactile and harmonious.
