Intro
Julie Bégin is a multidisciplinary artist based in Montreal, Canada, active in contemporary jewelry and object design. Through pared-down forms and materials, she creates designs of subtle elegance inspired by systems theory. Trained at the École de Joaillerie de Montréal from 2013 to 2016, she pursued her studies through workshops in Montreal and Europe. In 2017, she was selected for One Of A Kind, a flagship craft event in Toronto, and was invited to participate in Autor, the Bucharest art jewellery fair in 2020. She is a recipient of grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec. Her work has been showcased in Canada and abroad and can be found in private collections worldwide.

Statement

Inspired by systems theory and the notion of interdependence, the relationship between humans and their environment is at the center of Julie Bégin's creation. The multilayered interconnectedness of environmental, social, epidemiological, and political systems are illustrated in her creations through opposition and complementarity of shapes, textures and colours, and the use of positive and negative spaces. Sober and refined, her work consists of single editions and limited series combining precious metals, charred wood, and gems. She aims to eliminate any superfluous detail to offer a frank and direct representation of materials.

About Envy collection
With her current series Envy, Julie Bégin takes a look at the consumerist viewpoint of our planet. Each piece is composed of salvaged wood sculpted and charred by hand, recycled sterling silver, and emeralds. These materials are assembled in compositions that evoke the escalating extent to which nature is transformed by human actions, destabilizing the long-standing balance of our ecosystems.
