News!

The brooches from the series 'Portraits of Now' show the gamut of emotions we have experienced collectively during the Pandemic - they are relatable, approachable, and familiar and show the decades-strong practice of calligraphy of our Member Myung Urso.

Intro
Myung Urso was born in South Korea and currently living and working in the USA as a contemporary jewelry artist.

Statement

My artwork is strongly based on my MFA Fiber Art experience and Calligraphy background which I have been practicing since my youth. Much of my artwork originates from the power of a strong brushstroke, which leads me to be creatively spontaneous. Spontaneity is also a fundamental Korean aesthetic that does not pursue perfection. Through a lifetime of practicing calligraphy, I have been able to gain a way to freely express my inspirations and simplify what I see with lines and forms.

I am intrigued to see how my personal imagination can turn out a real object. Pursuing an idea without preliminary drawing leads to a spontaneous way of tracing unexpected results. My working process is more open toward momentary happenings rather than controlled by the plan. I rather explore and experience new and fresh ideas. My work is an expression of my personal experience, which transfers to an experience for the wearer. Often the art forms go in unexpected directions, such as life. I often witness how different elements play out in their own way, helping to define the destiny of each work. Simplicity in dealing with various textural forms is a playful and joyful approach to the creative process.

These recent jewelry' ("Elevation", "Plateau" series and "Scape") forms are a result of my traveling to the southern part of South Korea where the rocky landscapes and volcanic mountains left an impression on me.  Applying Asian ink and sewing techniques to fabric reflects my very first materials and techniques from when I first started making jewelry. After a decade of jewelry-making experiences, I felt the need to look back to my first starting point as a way to begin my next decade.

About ‘Portraits of this Era’
It's a personal observation about people, especially couples facing the circumstances of a Pandemic. My work generally reflects my personal daily life, though I have to accept the fact that today’s global events influence each individual’s life. Experiencing the Covid-19, I have come to realize that we are globally one people sharing the same social and political challenges.  Simple lines and forms within this series of work also represent complex emotional concepts.
