Intro
In my work, I explore past and present memories from environments and situations, and how these memories are intertwined with materials. Working mostly with personal memories,  I contemplate how much of them is individual, and how much is local and generational."

Ketli Tiitsar
Longing is connected to melancholy, nostalgia, loneliness and maybe naive romance. Longing for something unattainable absorbs our thoughts, but it can also get us closer to ourselves and to others. Longing can be something recognisable, connecting and present. The work of Ketli Tiitsar is made up of personal layers of history, but it invites us to take part and to connect.

The use of wood in Ketli Tiitsar work originated from a desire to reapply the everyday skills and techniques she learned as a child in a house heated by a wood-fired stove. It was her responsibility to prepare the heating material; to take it indoors and strip birch bark for kindling. In the studio, Ketli attempted to replicate a similar routine by reconstructing well known wood materials, and turn it into jewellery.

Ketli mainly uses wood taken from her childhood home and from her great grandparents’ garden. A few years ago, she became the owner of an old farmhouse that used to belong to her mother’s family in North-West Estonia. Now she takes care of the house and garden and from this, more than one century-old, building she has assembled materials and explored the many layers of the house. Step by step, year after year the house reveals its endless potential with its rich history.
