Intro
The German Goldsmiths' House Hanau is showing an extensive retrospective, honoring the 95th birthday of Salem based Master Goldsmith Ebbe Weiss-Weingart, one of the 20th-century pioneers of international author jewelry.

Artist list

Ebbe Weiss-Weingart
After her graduation from the Academy of Fine Arts Nuremberg (1939-1943), Ebbe Weiss-Weingart attends master school in Munich (1943-1945). Being a young master goldsmith, she settles at the Bodensee area and establishes her own studio. She moves to Salem in 1954 and works at her studio until 2015. With gold being a scarce good, the young artist would experiment with brass, wood, and colored vitrification and enjoys enameling. Soon in her career, in the 1950s, multiple of her works are presented at the Triennial in Mailand, where a silver medal is awarded to her. At this time, abstract organic shapes are at the center of her creations, incorporation of the figurative takes its origin.

In the 1960s/1970s, the artist repeatedly studies metal surfaces. Along the same lines as fine arts, her jewelry - mostly made of gold - is characterized by hatching, furrowing, folding, etching, or breaking. Besides, she is keen on experimenting with synthetic material, ostrich eggs, lapis lazuli, as well as corals and precious stones, which are carefully inserted to serve as touches of color.

Opulent neck jewelry with Keshi and Biwa Pearls excite her especially. One extraordinary work belongs to the Museum Angewandte Kunst Frankfurt and can currently be seen in Hanau. Alongside brooches and neck, ear and wrist jewelry, Ebbe Weiss-Weingart enjoys creating greater pieces, once in a while. In the 1960s, she is awarded numerous prizes, and in 1978, the Association for Goldsmiths' Art honors the artist by bestowing her the Golden Ring of Honor. Figurines, masks, and birds characterize many of her creations, and are playfully implemented in the brooches "Madhouse" and "Pigeon Loft". The latter is a loan by the Jewelry Museum Pforzheim.

At the beginning of the 1990s, Ebbe Weiss-Weingart commits herself to Chinese jade and introduces it into her works in a fantastical fashion. In her late work, she especially celebrates the design of small frog and duck brooches, in which she integrates gold coral and opals.

An extensive catalog (ger./engl.) was published at Arnoldsche Art Publishers to accompany the exhibition, which can be visited at the German Goldsmiths' House, until June 3rd.
