SPLIT
At the beginning there is a shiny polished, gold-plated silver stick - perfect and untouched.
Marc Monzó explores the interior of the sticks through splitting them. Carefully sawing the body of the stick, the hidden silver appears. The straight line starts to branch out and opens new options of volume and form.
Some of the pieces belonging to the „SPLIT“ collection, remind of classical, concentric shapes of jewelry in an abstract way. Based on the axis as the centre, Marc Monzó creates variations of separating and branching. This process comes up through sawing and bending, which represents an act of strong forces - nevertheless the shiny surface remains untouched.
In that way grows an interplay not only between silver and gold or inside and outside, also the perfect smooth golden surface of the sticks builds up a sharp contrast to the blunt interior, marked by the act of sawing.
The ambiguous meaning of „Split“ represents actually a characteristic trait of live.
Once more, the artist’s minimalistic language bares his view to a universal dimension.
His ability is, to transform it in an elegant and sophisticated way into jewelry.
0.5 DRAWINGS
According to his jewelry work, Marc Monzó developed a number of photographs.
Small compositions of 0.5 pencil leads, building up his view on matters of life.
Appearing as a flat image on the first view, the photographs show a 3 dimensional setting.
Each of the lines are made up from the body of the real pencil leads. This fact becomes comprehensible by discovering the extremely fine situation of light and shadow along the lines.
Marc Monzó takes the delicate leads as basic neutral unities. They built up the initial point to describe subjects of our life and without planning it, he came into subjects, which also affect his work in general:
Landscape, nature
Architecture, home
Human activity
The straight line as „working material“ appears as a constant part in the artist’s oeuvre. With attention to any graphic elements he drives them from two dimensionality into something physical.
Althought using straight lines could be considered as a strong limitation, the opposite seams to happen - Marc Monzó surprises us with a comprehensive universe.
