The Jewelry Venice Design Week Selection 2022 Open Call is open to anyone engaged in designing or working with precious metals, gemstones and other materials, including recycled or scrap materials. The award focuses on contemporary jewelry and is an ideal platform to increase awareness of your brand and acquire recognition in Italy.
For the 9th edition of the Jewelry Contest launched as a special subset event of the Venice Design Week 2022, that will have Origins: a creative journey from slow design to sustainability as its fil rouge, we wanted to combine the rich setting of contemporary Venice, with all that this new year has in store for her, with everything that revolves around the world of design. And, of course, of jewelry.

Imagining a jewelry exhibition on the theme of Surrealism was not easy: we could indeed state as a truth universally acknowledged that contemporary jewelry is already surrealist on its own. Already daring. Already bold. Already far from the notions traditionally tailored to this artistic medium. How then to properly get our message across to the designers?

Imagine, in the spirit of Surrealism, a piece of jewellery that is courageously irreverent, and that, through an unforgettable intermixing of colours, materials, twists and angles, is able to forever capture a moment in time. Be detached from reality and reason, be free and “automatic”, guided by your subconscious!

A moment’s mirror by Paul Eluard
It dissolves the day,
It shows men images detached from reality
It takes away the possibility of distraction
It is as hard as stone,
A shapeless stone,
A stone of movement and sight,
And its shine makes it seem as if all the armors and all the masks are forged,
That which the hand has also taken
disdains to acquire the form of the hand,
That which was understood no longer exists, The bird has been confused with the wind, Paradise with its truth,
Man with his reality.

The 2022 agenda for Venice is sure enough full of unmissable happenings whose influences simply could not be set aside in our own event: if on one part we have the 59th edition of the Art Biennale, focused on the prism of imagination and the
constant reinvention of self in an ever-changing world, we also have the Peggy Guggenheim Collection’s much-anticipated exhibit on Surrealism and magic, Anish Kapoor’s seminal show at the Gallerie dell’Accademia where, through his own personal researches on light, color and perspective, he will investigate and explore the principles of Venetian painting and the solo exhibition that the Pinault Collection will dedicate to Marlene Dumas and her lifelong commitment to underlining the effects that imagery has on our own perception of self and the world.

In short, the constant lure to be adventurous and creative, to dive far beyond the surface and push the boundaries of craft, could not be ignored.
Exploiting then the irreverence typical of the jewelry of our time we devised a theme that could do just that: compel designers to go beyond their abilities and, through any possible material, color and technique, create a jewel that didn’t limit itself to scratching the surface of an idea but rather take it to its extreme consequences in a way that could be completely free, “automatic” and, why not, irrational. To further inspire them we chose to title the Contest after a famous Paul Eluard poem, A moment’s mirror, in which he writes about searching for a “dissolved” moment to crystallize, immobilize, capture and lock in a material form.
That form to him was poetry.
To us, it will be that which above all others bridges the divide between the contemporary functionality of design and the timeless aesthetic of art: jewelry.
The competition is open to any creative, whether professional or student, young or seasoned, first - time participants or veterans; many enter the contest to have the possibility to exhibit in Venice (and we are working to bring it abroad). All entries must be submitted by April 15th 2022 at 12 pm (CET).
