Intro
Applications are invited for the position of Chair of Material and Design Innovation.
We are seeking to appoint an outstanding designer/maker to the post. The major remit of the role is to provide outward-facing strategic leadership in making and innovation by supporting the University’s strategic themes: influencing globally; contributing locally, maintaining and creating partnerships with creative industries. There will also be a requirement to be involved with enhancing learning and teaching initiatives within the School of Design and ECA more generally.

Person Specification.
You will have a specialism in Jewellery and Silversmithing and particular expertise and interests in bridging digital technologies and traditional ways of making in order to develop new modes of thinking and practice from an inter-disciplinary perspective. You will have a level of digital expertise and be interested in leading digital technologies in the role. Key objectives for the successful appointee will be to help develop the School’s public research and innovation profile and increase research income.

Your record of recent work will be commensurate with an internationally recognised research profile for the 2020 REF. You should be able to demonstrate experience of leading research at the highest level including securing prestigious research grants. A record of successful supervision of research students and researchers is also essential.

In addition to making a major contribution to the School of Design, the successful applicant will play an active and collegiate role within the Edinburgh College of Art, the wider University and the external environment, both nationally and internationally.

This position is full time and open-ended.

Salary Scale: Professorial Scale.

Job description
The post holder will be based in the School of Design, within Edinburgh College of Art in the University of Edinburgh’s College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

The successful applicant will have responsibility to:
Lead and extend research in the area of Jewellery and Silversmithing within the School of Design.
Lead research funding applications to appropriate major grant awarding bodies.
Present, exhibit and/or publish research outputs in appropriate, high quality settings.
Chair raft (the School of Design’s research network for digital technology and traditional ways of making).
Provide leadership for other colleagues, assisting them in publishing and/or exhibiting their research and gaining external research funding.
Provide academic vision and leadership.
Recruit and supervise research students to successful completion.
Teach in Jewellery and Silversmithing and other School of Design and ECA subject areas allied to their research specialism.
Develop and demonstrate research impact beyond academia.
Develop research partnerships with external stakeholders in Design.
Work in collaboration with other staff and assume leadership responsibilities within the School of Design and Edinburgh College of Art if and when required.
Undertake other duties as determined by the Head of Design and the Principal of Edinburgh College of Art.
