(...) The workshop runned by Ted Noten will ask participants to engage with skills and techniques which are in danger of extinction e.g. gun engraving, pen making, comb making and chasing (...)
This is a unique opportunity to work with Ted Noten, who is the International Research Fellow at the School of Jewellery in Birmingham. He invites open-minded jewellers, designers, artists and other practitioners who are interested in this unique dialogue between past and present techniques and aesthetics.
The workshop will ask participants to engage with skills and techniques which are in danger of extinction e.g. gun engraving, pen making, comb making and chasing; for a complete list contact Harriett Plant. Some of these techniques are still being practiced within the Jewellery Quarter (www.the-quarter.com) and the people who have those skills are our Heroes. This will be an exciting and intensive workshop involving challenging research, design development and making.
Every participant will work with a Hero. Our Heroes have been working in the trade for many years and most of them are over 60. There will be interactive seminars and lectures about design aesthetics/ almost forgotten skills/ the history of the Jewellery Quarter. There will be an exhibition and a book launch later in the year. These will document the work produced as outcomes of the project.
How to apply
Send name, contact details, a short CV and 7 images jpeg (72dpi). These should comprise: 4 of your own work, 1 of an inspirational item, 2 of works by another artist in your field which you admire. Accompanied by a short statement of no more than 100 words indicating why you want to take part in the workshop. Send to Harriett Plant
Deadline: 1 June
Selection process: 4 June
A committee including Ted Noten will make the selection.
Payments/deposits
After selection for the Heroes project the participant will make a deposit of £175 before 1 July.
This deposit confirms their participation and is not refundable.
The balance to be paid by the commencement of the workshop.
