The Jewellery Degree Program at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle (BURG) explores wearable art forms, encompassing jewellery and wearable sculptures. Jewellery and worn sculptural objects are examined as powerful tools for understanding and communication embedded in contemporary life, including identity, culture, aesthetics, society, technology, emotion, and more.
Artistic expressions will be conceived in relation to individual experiences and perspectives such as that of the self, the wearer, the artist, and/or the observer. The program aims to help students to define their artistic identity and develop a strong body of work.
The Jewellery Degree Program places emphasis on making and handling materials, as well as the accumulation of material-based knowledge. Making is regarded as a vehicle for thinking and gaining knowledge. Additionally, the program encourages public engagement with jewellery and wearable sculptures, both during creation and presentation, to better understand responses to students’ artistic practices. Close collaborations with communities external to the academic institution are practised. The learning environment is cross-disciplinary, where students from diverse artistic and design disciplines study in groups, along with experts from arts, the humanities, social and natural sciences.
About BURG:
BURG has a distinctive profile in the German university landscape, featuring two departments, Art and Design. BURG has been offering excellent conditions for study since 1915. With over 1,000 students, it is one of the largest universities of Art and Design in Germany.
Workshops and Facilities:
- Goldsmith and Silversmith Workshop
The workshop is set up as a traditional goldsmithing and silversmithing workshop. It caters for working with metals, experimental materials, and various techniques. Each student is assigned their own jewellery workbench and drawing table.
- Digital Workshops
Students can also work at the Design Campus's Central Workshops, where a Digital workshop supports various digital 3D productions.
- Enamelling Workshop
The processing and application of enamel have a long tradition at BURG. We have the increasingly rare opportunity to work with enamel on both precious metal and steel.
- Campus Art
We share the Art Campus with Ceramics, Book Art, Sculpture and Graphics.
