Intro
Jewellery Research Lab, School of Design and Creative Arts (SCDA), Loughborough University, UK. Jewellery Research Lab (JR Lab), based at Loughborough University is a research laboratory exclusively dedicated to advanced study in art jewellery/contemporary jewellery, cultural heritage, new technologies and wellbeing in jewellery practice-based research. It is led by Dr Roberta Bernabei at the School of Design and Creative Arts at Loughborough University.
Throughout its history, Loughborough University has built upon its distinctive characteristics. In 1909 a small Technical Institute in the centre of Loughborough was established, which provided local facilities for further education and offered courses in technical subjects, science, and art.
Today it is one of the UK’s leading universities, with a reputation for excellence in teaching and research. Main Loughborough University campus is located in the centre of England. In 2015 Loughborough opened a second campus on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London.

Loughborough University is ranked 1st in the UK for Design and Crafts (The Guardian University Guide 2022). The results of the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF) show that 91% of Loughborough University’s research is now ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally-excellent’. Our research in the School of Design and Creative Arts (SDCA) has significant impact and contribution to academia, culture, society, and the economy, including heritage, and well-being.

In February 2022, Dr. Roberta Bernabei with SDCA support established the first dedicated research lab for art jewellery, cultural heritage, wellbeing, and new technologies in jewellery. She leads a passionate team of seven doctoral researchers or Ph.D. students, who have exhibited their work at 2022 Florence Jewellery Week (FJW), and undertook research field works during 2022 FJW, and in July at Munich Jewellery Week.

This year we celebrate sixty years of active contribution to the field of jewellery at higher education in the UK. A major international event, ‘Jewellery FOR Life’, that comprises a symposium, an exhibition, and participatory projects will take place from the 30th of November 2022 at SDCA, UK.
