The first year of Galerie Rob Koudijs brought great exhibitions by innovative jewellers, showing groundbreaking work. To record these events and to give everyone a change to catch up on the developments, we produced a magazine that contains much information about the artists and their ideas, and even more pictures of the jewellery pieces and the shows.
On the first of April, 2007, a thirty-year commitment to contemporary jewellery was crowned with the opening of Galerie Rob Koudijs – a refuge of 100 square metres where innovations in this field can flourish.
The tension between autonomous sculpture and wearable object lends jewellery a lustre that has little to do with the temptation of gold, silver, or sparkling stones.
The jewellery world is in a phase of unprecedented international expansion, the effect both of the internet and of growing cooperation between prominent schools in the applied arts. New artists have been appearing from all corners of Europe, America and Japan.
A clean slate presented the exciting possibility of establishing a connection between this new, innovative generation and the gallery, as an addition to the renowned artists who had already agreed to cooperate. Regular solo exhibitions will give visitors to our gallery insight into their development over the coming years.
The gallery’s ample space lets them design their own presentations.
This year, Jantje Fleischhut and Célio Braga have already risen to the challenge. Our Front Room is the spot for new artists and topical projects. Our large display of stock will always provide an overview of what the gallery has to offer. Attending the art fairs Object in Rotterdam and Collect in London stimulated and confirmed our all-consuming enthusiasm.
This magazine reports on the first year of the gallery. An ambitious programme is also planned for the year to come, including the presentation of several accompanying books. We invite you to come join in our excitement.
