Intro
It is always intriguing to note that, from the 19th century onwards, jewellery became almost exclusively associated with women, much like beautiful dolls.
Women were expected to wear these ornaments as symbols of their husband’s social standing, raising the question of power.

Fast forward to today, and while gender should no longer be an issue, disparities remain.

Despite women being the majority in educational settings, they are still underrepresented in art jewellery, where their contributions have often been overshadowed by their male colleagues. However, a vibrant scene of female artists has always been present from the outset, helping to shape and legitimise art jewellery as a unique form of expression.

In this series, we have selected for you monographs on some of these Great Ladies who, through their vision and careers, have significantly influenced contemporary jewellery.
