Professor Friedrich Becker (1922-1997) was one of the outstanding artistic personalities of our time. As an internationally renowned goldsmith, as a creator of kinetic objects, and as a designer, he had a formative influence on goldsmiths' art during the second half of the twentieth century. For his work, he was awarded first prizes and received the highest accolades from all over the world. Prestigious museums have included his work in their collections and have shown them in numerous exhibitions.

In awarding the Friedrich Becker Prize - donated by Hildegard Becker - the Gesellschaft für Goldschmiedekunst (Society for Goldsmiths' Art), Hanau wishes to commemorate this extraordinary individual and important designer, Friedrich Becker, and entirely in accordance with his spirit, to distinguish the best of the best from among the succeeding generation of designers.

The prize

Is endowed with Euro 5.000,-- and will be awarded every three years by the Gesellschaft für Goldschmiedekunst, Hanau, for exceptional, personally created design with highest-quality execution.

Theme

A piece of jewellery or a small utensil, either one-of-a-kind or a prototype for serial production, may be submitted. The theme is open. Your latest work or an older object are equally welcome.

Materials

As materials, gold, silver, platinum, and stainless steel will be accepted. Diamonds, other precious stones, pearls, glass (no enamel) and synthetic stones may be used as supplementary materials.

Participants

Gold- and silversmiths, metal artists, and designers, both domestic and foreign, are invited to submit entries.

Participation Rules

Each entrant may submit only one work, which must be exclusively his own design and execution.

Insurance

The value in euros stated by the participant will be considered as the insurance value (maximal value: 15.000,-- Euro). Shipping costs in both directions are the responsibility of the participant. For return shipping including insurance Euro 15,00 (Germany), Euro 25,00 (Europe), and Euro 30,00 (Non-European countries) in cash or as check in Euro must be included. Insurance coverage will begin as soon as the submission is received by the organizer.

Deadline

The submission must arrive free of all charges between 15. and 22. March 2005 at the organizer:

Each submission must be accompanied by the registration form.

The judging will take place in March, 2005, in Hanau.

The decision of the jury is final with no legal recourse.

Award ceremony

The prize will be awarded on May 21, 2005, at the Goethe Museum, Schloss Jägerhof, in Düsseldorf.
The award address will be held by Dr. Rüdiger Joppien, Museum of Art and Industry, Hamburg.
