Bio

After graduated from Central Saint Martins college of art and design in London, I worked as a tutor for a year at SIA School of International Art Studio in Guangzhou, China. I am currently starting my own studio based in China, focusing on the promotion of contemporary jewellery through my works and commission projects with fashion designers and artists. My recent achievement is second place in The Munich Show’s European jewellery design competition 2017.

Statement

About the series Same Old $hit
A typical phenomenon persists in the current Chinese jewellery market: material value is always a prior consideration; a loop, a globe or a line under a well-known brand can be described as classic constructions, elegant, minimal, luxurious and even unique; the monotonous beading technique is imperishable; the position of the heart, cross, key pendants have never wavered; 'celeb style' is the hottest etc. In this collection, conventional designs were challenged in terms of value, symbolism and technical practices to awaken ponderation of the way we consume and design.

Kay Guo on her own practice
Deeply influenced by my Buddhist background, I intend to bring enlightenment through jewellery based on my own life experiences. I seek inspiration in Buddhist doctrines, the relationship between people’s physical body and mental phenomena, and a wide range of aspects of everyday life. With a minimal aesthetic, I create subtle and transformable jewellery that is interactive, either with the wearer or the viewer, making it not just an object but an experience.
